Favorite Bourbon

Pappy's Distillery was ACTUALLY BOUGHT by Buffalo Trace. Also, Pappy BUYS barrels from BT to sell as their own brand

That is the connection.

Nope, Physical distillery is long gone. Not a drop since the 90s. Too full of Asbestos to be saved. What ever was sold would be name only. That's what makes S-W so rare. BT has their own distillery. Yes, Pappy gets choice Barrels to use from BT, true. Fairly recently, they started adulterating the 20 year Family Reserve with it. Eventually, there will be no S-W in it. For now, the only pure S-W is the 23 year Family Reserve. When its gone, its gone forever. The last of the S-W barrels are on BT property.

The connection is irrelevant as far as you substantiating your claim that, “Buffalo Trace does not actually distill anything - they just dilute and age the bourbon”. Nonsense.

I also question your claim that Buffalo Trace purchased “Pappy’s Distillery”. It’s a distillery in name only (a.k.a. a label) and that label is still majority owned by the Van Winkle family. Yes, Buffalo Trace produces and bottles Pappy product; but a joint venture does not an acquisition make.

Again, if you have any more current or reliable sources than I do feel free to provide them and I'll stand corrected. :thmbsp:

You are very correct. They were "Distillery of the year" in 2014. Harlen Wheatley has been their master distiller since 2005. Prior to that it was Elmer T. Lee. The idea that they are not a distillery is misinformed BS. This stuff can googled. Ask around on www.straightbourbon.com, visit the DISTILLERY or give them a call if you dont believe it guys.

twkted, yup Puglia is still there, haven't been there myself this century, I doubt much has changed. Not too worry, I still have 1 bottle each of the Antique & the Weller 12 in the bullpen, plus what is open on the bar. Thank you for your generous off though, I have not exhausted all of my options as of yet. I like the Larceny, and would rank it just below the Weller bottlings in taste. Worth taking out for a test drive. With our crappy forecast there will be some in my future tomorrow night.

Hey no problem on the offer. Well I bypassed the Larceny for the Weller again given it was the same price. I'll get to it eventually.

The Larceny is OK good. But I'm still partial to Weller at this point. Spoiled maybe?

I really like the Woodford Reserve and recommend any Bourbon fan who has not tried it, to do so. Splurge a little.

I am mostly a Scotch guy but the Labrot & Graham double oaked Woodford Reserve Kentucky strait is some mighty fine Bourbon whisky!

Snatched a 750ml (i think) of Rebel Yell this restock friday afternoon. Decent and tasty squeezins for the buck...$17.

But man...there's one yellava displacement dimple in the bottom of their glass! She's a deep one. Sneaky bassards. Moreover....I come to find no mention whatsoever of the actual volume on the label. ???

What happened to the weights and measures dept.? :D:scratch2:

Believe that comes from Heaven Hill, only 80 proof. In the day, Rebel Yell was also S-W. They also have a reserve, only a few dollars more that is 90 proof. Havent tried it.

I'm looking forward to trying the Larceny as it came highly recommended from a fellow who works at my local store that has become a good friend as well as a valued source of solid, no BS information.

I'd be more than happy to send you some Weller since it's scarce where you are. Let me know and I'll get it headed your way. I think I paid around $26 this past Friday night.

Got the Larceny the other night, 19.99. I prefer the basic Weller at 15.99-16.99 around here, and by a large margin. Little whiffs of vanilla Caramel were promising, tasting revealed leather, candle wax, with a finish of burned wood and rubbing alcohol. Wellers, Buffalo Trace, shoot even Makers were superior to my taste buds. I will have to say, it was better than "Jefferson Reserve, Very Old, Very Small Batch" at 50.00 I also bought. The worst Bourbon ever, what was I thinking. I was about to settle for decent but not earth shattering Blanton's at the same price point. It was 90.2 proof, very light brown, like weak tea. Awful. Going to my secretary. I wouldnt buy it again for 15.99!

Looking at the bottle, "bottled by Paramount Distillers, Cleveland, OH Prepared by Castle Brands, Lawrenceburg, IN." For the love of pete. What was I thinking!

Thank for the update, glad you did it so I won't have to.

Well, tastes vary....the Larceny is only 19.99 so is understandable. I like Weller basic 90 proof Bourbon better, but some may not. The Old Bardstown 100 proof Sour Mash was way better than all of them (to me) at 27.00

I was bummed about the Jefferson Reserve as well, for that kind of coin you should be pretty happy about your purchase.

Interestingly, Jefferson's 10 Year Old 100% Rye Whiskey (sourced from Alberta Distillers Ltd.) is pretty good and a pretty good deal if you're into the spiciness of aged 100% rye whiskey.

Weller at $16? WTH? You must be buying it by the truckload. It's $24-& 26 here. Larceny is $24. Weller SR, (90 proof), is hard to beat for a daily driver even at $26. I wish I'd found out about it years ago. I've spent a ton on Knob Creek Single Barrel Select but had to cool it off. Weller is the first wheated I've had and I'm sprung. Hell, my wife can't stand bourbon but she'll sneak a sip of my Weller.

Anybody remember Bourbon Surpreme? My FIL drank that junk for years. I don't think they even make it anymore, at least I hope not.

I see Old Grand Dad Bonded came out with a new label&bottle shape,
Hope they didn't change the spirits,I'll find out come payday:scratch2:

Same taste,
High rye mash bill on the label now,
Some kind of rubber/plastic stop on the top/cork instead of the usual twist top,Im sure they did enough testing on evaporation a 1/5 will lose compared to the twist cap on the elder bottles.
Steel Reserve is a nice chaser&goe's good with the salt&vinegar chips:thmbsp:

Or my choice (?) in Jr. College, Stillbrook (1969). We called it still birth. It seems to have disappeared. And appropriately so.
