Favorite Bourbon

Since Weller is now getting scarce, I picked up some Larceny for $29/750ml, which is pretty good for NYC pricing. I hear it is cheaper elsewhere in the country. I also bought a bottle of Bernheim a Wheat whiskey, I only had a wee dram but I thought it was pretty good.

PVW is good but I have had better.

That isnt, its the 15 year with no S-W in it at all. The 20 year Family Reserve version used to be, but is now mixed with other (albeit fine) Whiskeys provided by Buffalo Trace. If you can latch onto some 23 year Family Reserve, your comment would be equivalent to, but not superior to, the 20 year. As I recall from the last bottle of 15 year like you show, its is higher than the 90 proof of the other Family Reserves....

Your 15 year, while good, holds no candle to the S-W I speak of. For that matter, I prefer their Lot B to the 15 year Family reserve. It is not S-W either.

The only one I havent had a ton of is the Rye. Appears the 23 year is a little over 95 proof.

Aaahhhh...S-W, touché .

If you are presented the opportunity, try the Elijah Craig 21 or 23 yr old. Very good. Heaven Hill knocked it out of the park on those.

Just for your FYI -

"So what's the story behind this liquid gold? Based in Frankfort, KY, the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery is not actually a distillery at all, but rather a company that contracts the production of its coveted spirits to Buffalo Trace. Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle, for whom the bourbon is named, started selling whiskey in 1893 as a salesman for W. L. Weller. He would eventually go on to become the president of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which produced many well-respected whiskeys through the 1960s. However, years after Pappy passed away, stockholders forced the sale of the distillery; to keep the family tradition alive, Julian Van Winkle III and his father started buying back barrels of their own bourbon and bottling it under the Old Rip Van Winkle label (some of which is still being sold today)."

Buffalo Trace cannot produce enough neutral spirits on it's own to keep up with demand, hence why they are buying it. Often times, the internal and external are blended together.

:scratch2: Hmm, you declared that the Buffalo Trace distillery does not distill anything? Yet, actually they do.

What relevance does this FYI (about the Pappy brand) have substantiating your claim that the Buffalo Trace distillery is simply and solely in the business of diluting and aging outsourced NGS?

:scratch2:

I wasn't aware Weller was getting scarce. There's always plenty on the shelves at my local store. What's scarce here is Deviant Dales and Arrogant Bastard. Which did you try, the Larcerny or the Bernheim?

Anything over 90 proof is just too harsh for my tastes. I love Knob Creek Single Barrel but at 120 proof I don't enjoy it straight up. Having just finished my second bottle of Weller I think it's to be tough to replace as my daily driver although I do plan on trying the Larceny.

twkted, this is my second bottle of Larceny & since I am a fan of wheat style bourbons, I liked it enough to buy the second bottle. I am afraid that the word has gotten out that Van Winkle selects first & Weller gets second dibs on barrels, so some folks are buying Weller thinking that it is a close second to Van Winkle. One of my usual sources for Weller was completely sold out when I went there last week.

I tried the Bernheim and liked it & will try some more this weekend. The rye bite was missing, obviously, but you could clearly identify it as an American whiskey. I certainly enjoyed it more than my foray into 100% corn whiskey, "Mellow Corn" which was too oily for my taste.

Get the Small Batch, it's just 100 proof.

I don't mind higher proofs, I drink Booker's neat.

If you prefer a rye mash bill...I'll sit down with it again when chance arises. As you get into the esoterics, personal choice plays a serious role, naturally. I've yet to taste anything from Heaven Hill I would prefer over S-W, which will soon leave this earth. Again, personal preferences. I dont really care all that much about Scotch...but I have friends who do and I can appreciate and enjoy it, but my high dollar purchases are bourbon.

I'm looking forward to trying the Larceny as it came highly recommended from a fellow who works at my local store that has become a good friend as well as a valued source of solid, no BS information.

I'd be more than happy to send you some Weller since it's scarce where you are. Let me know and I'll get it headed your way. I think I paid around $26 this past Friday night.

Man I haven't been to NYC in years. Is Puglia still there? The owner was quite a character, I used to really enjoy eating there and visiting with him.

I see Old Grand Dad Bonded came out with a new label&bottle shape,
Hope they didn't change the spirits,I'll find out come payday:scratch2:

Pappy's Distillery was ACTUALLY BOUGHT by Buffalo Trace. Also, Pappy BUYS barrels from BT to sell as their own brand

That is the connection.

The connection is irrelevant as far as you substantiating your claim that, “Buffalo Trace does not actually distill anything - they just dilute and age the bourbon”. Nonsense.

I also question your claim that Buffalo Trace purchased “Pappy’s Distillery”. It’s a distillery in name only (a.k.a. a label) and that label is still majority owned by the Van Winkle family. Yes, Buffalo Trace produces and bottles Pappy product; but a joint venture does not an acquisition make.

Again, if you have any more current or reliable sources than I do feel free to provide them and I'll stand corrected. :thmbsp:

twkted, yup Puglia is still there, haven't been there myself this century, I doubt much has changed. Not too worry, I still have 1 bottle each of the Antique & the Weller 12 in the bullpen, plus what is open on the bar. Thank you for your generous off though, I have not exhausted all of my options as of yet. I like the Larceny, and would rank it just below the Weller bottlings in taste. Worth taking out for a test drive. With our crappy forecast there will be some in my future tomorrow night.

Over the past year or so, my liquor cabinet has been home to Maker`s, Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig 12 year-old, Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel. All good choices, IMHO, with high marks going to Woodford and Elmer T.

As an aside, I found Bernheim Original 100% Wheat Whiskey to be a tasty alternative....

Jack is ok, little too burnt. Makers mark is too smooth for me but goes great with soda and is best in a mint julep. Beam is my go to bourbon. Dickel's not bad either. Wild turkey is straight to the drunk tank stuff and booker is like a duck walking on your grave
