Favorite Bourbon

Well, the Weller 12 came in. Boys, it has been discovered. It cost $61 for a 1.75l bottle. It is approaching the price of Woodford Reserve.

Looks like the Weller prices have been creeping up since folks look at it as the "Poor Man's Van Winkle". Still one of my favorite whiskeys.

Had the sad duty of finishing off my bottle of Elmer T. Lee last weekend, that's another one suffering from price creep, I guess due to the publicity of Mr. Lee passing away last year.

All Weller products have been off the shelves down here since Christmas. The Weller Special Reserve ("The Wheater Formerly Known as 7 Year Old") reappeared this week, and the price had jumped 20% ($26 instead of $21 a .750l). Oddly, the 1.75l jug hit the shelves yesterday, and the price was unchanged ($35). I figure that was just not keeping up.

I'm a big fan of the Willett bourbons and ryes. I've only be able to find the pot still bourbon but have managed to find the 2yr, 6 yr and 8yr rye.

All Weller bottlings have been dropped completely from the liquor stores in my county (the only county in the country that acts as the wholesaler for all alcohol of any type (stupid feckin' law, BTW)).

Speaking of Buffalo Trace products, regular old Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare 10 are becoming very hard to find across the whole county due to inventory issues at Buffalo Trace distillery. Both, along with Weller 107 and Reserve, were ubiquitous across all stores in the county. Now, all are nearly impossible to find.

I expect there will be an 'explosion' of wheat bourbons soon, the 'Pappyfication' of bourbon marketing. I'm still shocked that Heaven Hill has so completely fuxed-up the venerable Rebel Yell brand.

There really are precious few wheaters at the moment. It pretty much comes down to (the hard-to-find and expensive) Pappy's, the more moderately priced (and still hard-to-find) Weller's, Makers Mark and the young, unimpressive (from what I hear) Rebel Yell, though admittedly I haven't had Rebel Yell in 35-40 years.

The Rebel ell you had 35-40 years ago was a Van Winkle owned Stitzel-Weller product. Pure gold.

Here's a list I found of current 'wheaters'.

And of all those, Maker's Mark is the only one routinely available around here (and we have a pretty good selection).

Hey, here in Kentucky Tea country finding Weller is getting harder and harder. A shipment comes in and is gone. Fine Bourbon has been discovered by the COOL KIDS!

Us old timers are making due....

Old Grandad bonded was off the shelf:thumbsdn:
Gonna save out the 1/2 bottle I have left&try out this.
Evan Willams, $15 & some change for a 5th.

I took your advice Finnbow and poured two fingers of Larceny neat last night. For some reason Larceny is more expensive in the NYC area than elsewhere in the country. I think I paid $34 plus tax for a bottle. Still, a nice "Wheater" I could see this going into the rotation.

I was pleased to see that Weller Special Reserve had actually returned to its 'normal' price of $21 for a .75lt (as opposed to the $26 it was priced at a couple weeks ago when it reappeared on the shelves after a short absence).

I have found it under 20 a time or two...no 12 year for some while. 2 "inexpensive" finds lately, Ezra B Single Barrel 12 year...Some things I liked, somethings I'm not sure of...Like Woodford Reserve, there is the taste of "Tails"in there. I think it was low to mid 30 dollar range. The other, surprisingly drinkable for 100 proof Sour Mash is Old Bardstown at upper 20 dollar range.

For an old boy spoiled on Stitzel-Weller Bourbon his whole life, I've had to face change. The only unadulterated version I know of is Pappy Van Winkle 23 yr Family reserve and it seems to be north of 250.00, presentation case notwithstanding. I have finally polished off all my "old dustys" of 20 year Family Reserve, which when they were bought was still 100% S-W, not so now. The bottles in my bunker are now long gone.

I remember a day when the average bottle of Old Fitzgerald, or even Rebel Yell, were fine whiskey from that famous distillery, long gone since the 90s. Now those brands are just shadows of what once was. Maybe I will buck up for some 23 year, just to allow that wonderful elixir to flow into my pie hole one last time.

Salute,
Russellc

I'm feeling good. I just ordered a Bottlehead DAC using some creative funding and now will celebrate with a Weller 90 (7).
