Favorite Bourbon

Missed out on the Weller 107 that came in last week so I'm trying some Bernheim sm. batch out of Heaven Hill.

Wasn't all that impressed with the Makers Mark for some reason,Weird after taste on a few shots&more.
Didn't get all that much of a buzz off it,Was ok but wouldn't replace it for the tried&true OGD bonded.
Maybe it's just not what im use to/biased.
Have bout 1/2 or less of the dinky bottle left,Gonna maybe see something different on the shelf to compare it to.

I'll have to check out Wild Turkey at Thanksgiving, if there is time.

I ran out of Weller 90 proof yesterday. I made a loop to the Weller store today.

No Weller 12 yet. But I joined their mailing list. It is supposed to announce Weller 12 when it arrives.

Who did you contact about getting on Weller's mailing list? I had the 12 year at a bar in Covington, KY, and loved it.

Hi all,

Finn, I have GOT to buy some good ol' Buffalo Trace as I suspect it is a Bourbon that I will enjoy. I am a fan of the (budget) W.L. Weller Special Reserve which is an outstanding bargain. My current favorites are "Old Grand Dad" (Bonded) "Wild Turkey 101" and "Wild Turkey Rare Breed 112.8 proof". And of course the aforementioned "W.L. Weller Special Reserve". I'd like to try some other BT expressions as well.

SixCats!

After having the 12 year, I tried the Weller Special Reserve, and was extremely impressed for the price... but now I can't even find that in my stores. :sigh:

I tried to see if MM would scratch my itch for Weller, but I am not enjoying it as much as I had hoped. I have half of a small bottle left, myself.

I have felt the same way for a while now. Something seems off with the after taste the last few times I've had Makers. I used to drink it often 10-15 years ago, but might only have some a couple times a year now. Maybe I just got accustomed to other flavors.

I got on the liquor store's email list. They are supposed to send emails when Weller 12 comes in.

I've just tried Elmer T. Lee single barrel. It has quite a reputation, but is the polar opposite of Weller 12. It has a very high rye content in the mashbill (as opposed to wheat). It's quite spicy, but I actually prefer plain ol' Buffalo Trace.

After lots of trial, I've concluded that my favorite mid-priced Bourbons are Buffalo Trace for a rye mashbill and Weller 12 for a wheater. Too bad Weller 12 is an annual deal around here, with high accompanying high interest. If you blink, you miss it.

Agree with you on that, but I thought Buffalo Trace was a wheater? Perhaps I'm wrong, wouldnt be the first time. Its whats for dinner tonight! I havent seen Weller 12 in quite a while...

Well I guess the truth is in the middle, and not real clear:

Seems to be in the "low rye" mash bill, whilst the Elmer T Lee is in a higher rye mash bill...

When I toured the BT Distillery, the guide told us it was wheat not rye.

Regular ol' Buffalo Trace is from the Mashbill #1 (with rye), Elmer T Lee is from the Rye Mashbill #2 (slightly higher rye). Pappy and the Wellers are all wheat mashbills.

OK, I waste sippinn everything handed to me while our guide was talking. There was a long bar of samples to try. So might be confused, I sure know something to eat was called for after the tour.

Because both rye and wheat bourbons are distilled at BT, the tour guide might have showing you the Weller's-Van Winkle line.

I've seen a few bottles at some of my specialty places called "Orphan Barrels"
or something like that....high 70s to low 80 dollars, 20 year old. Anyone go for one of these? Sales person was trying to infer it may be S-W, which I seriously doubt.

Barterhouse was decent. Old Blowhard was too oaky for me. Here is a little background on them, albeit from a biased source. I happen to agree with Mr. Cowdery:

Help a brother out. I'm going out to a place that has a good bourbon selection. I'm hoping to try 2 or maybe 3 different ones. The list is pasted below. Any recommendations? I know Woodford, Jefferson's, Maker's and ELijah Craig. I like the first two.

Thanks in advance

My favorite everyday Bourbon on that list is Buffalo Trace. Up the price ladder a bit, Eagle Rare, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Knob Creek Single Barrel are all very solid. The Knob Creek Single Barrel is powerful stuff, 120 proof, and needs a splash of water or it's a bit hot.

If they have any WL Weller try a bottle. Or Pogue should be on your list.

Another more available would be Old Fitzgerald.

Thanks, Finnbow. Most of these are not readily available at our local LCBO (that's our Province-run likker store), so I've never run into most of them. I'll check them out on line, and come up with some choices for Friday night. That Evan Williams sounds pretty good.
