Favorite Bourbon

Weller at $16? WTH? You must be buying it by the truckload. It's $24-& 26 here. Larceny is $24. Weller SR, (90 proof), is hard to beat for a daily driver even at $26. I wish I'd found out about it years ago. I've spent a ton on Knob Creek Single Barrel Select but had to cool it off. Weller is the first wheated I've had and I'm sprung. Hell, my wife can't stand bourbon but she'll sneak a sip of my Weller.

Nope, Hyvee grocery store. 1.75 is low-mid 30s. I am talking the basic 90 proof stuff. Larceny was 19,99.

Inexpensive (or should be) Bourbon Comparison

Compared some Bourbon today, nothing fancy just off the shelf choices:

The Jeffersons was disappointing, costing far more than its worth. The Larceny was OK, had some off tastes Ive commented on previously, but at its price point, acceptable. The Evan Williams Single barrel was worth the money, way cheaper than the Jeffersons and MUCH better. The winners were the Old Grand dad 114, (for what it is) and No 1 here was the Old Bardstown 100 proof.

Tasting was officiated over by Boy Einstein the Cat. The older (the picture not the cat) Kitten pic is from my 2010 F-5 build in DIY forum here.

Broke down & purchased some Glencairne glasses off Amazon. Designed for sipping your whiskey neat, I got tired of taking down the brandy snifters. First I poured some Old Weller Antique, the glass does concentrate the aromas, as promised. I then rinsed out the glass and poured in some Bernheim Wheat Whiskey. That might have the softest mouth feel of any whiskey I have tried. I have to say I enjoyed using the glass, although I wish it was slightly larger, although that would only increase my consumption.

I was also able to acquire, through a buddy of mine, some Willett Pot Still @ $38 & a bottle of Weller Special Reserve 1.75ml @ $30, they were out of both W.L. Weller 12 year & "Antique". Adding some depth to the bunker.

RT Fan, That might be what I bought a few years back. It is posted somewhere, but darned if I can find it.

That is just the way to sample Weller 12. (have a 1.75L that I have had 3 drinks from)

Is "the softest mouth feel" a good thing or bad thing?

Regarding the Bernheim I thought it was a good thing. Since I prefer Wheated bourbons I thought I would like to try a Wheat Whiskey. Some whiskies have an antiseptic feel or taste to them, which comes off as sharp or dry. This one strikes me as mellow.

I've drank Jack Daniels for many years, but in the past few months I've tried about a dozen different whiskeys - mostly bourbons. I don't think I've found one that I don't like, but here's the ones that I like most (thus far):

  • Four Roses Single Barrel
  • Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
  • Jefferson's Reserve
  • Elijah Craig Small Batch 12 yo

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is good when I want something more "bold".

Unfortunately some of the other brands discussed in this thread, like Pappy Van Winkle, aren't available where I live.

I think it's like wine (or tube amps) - they all taste (sound) a little different - it just depends on what I'm in the mood for.

I think you will like it Grainger, even north of $40 a bottle it is an excellent value. If anything it over delivers compared to other bottles in that price range.

I've tried a few bottles of that Wheat Whiskey, I found it rather pleasant.
Made just the way Bourbon is, just no corn.

Yesterday I bought a bottle of Woodford Reserve Distillers Select (90.4 proof) on sale for $31.95. I’ve tried it a couple of times, and it’s nice, but thus far it’s not one of my favorites. Just not enough character for me. Of course I need to be fair and give it another try.

Right now I’m sipping a glass of Buffalo Trace (90) on the rocks, based on recommendations in this thread. I think that it’s a nice, easy drinking bourbon. I don’t remember what I paid for the Buffalo Trace - however yesterday I bought Four Roses Single Barrel (100) for $34.98 – and I think that the Four Roses Single Barrel is well worth the extra bucks.

Based on only a few months of taste comparisons - (I know some here have been comparing bourbons for years) - The Four Roses Single Barrel is still my favorite thus far.

I’m currently out of Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit (101). It’s difficult to find where I live. But I’m definitely going to buy another bottle when I find it. I recall it being very enjoyable – though it’s more expensive. Any thoughts on this one?

Agreed on the Woodford. Also agreed on the Buffalo Trace, Which I find superior.

No Weller on the shelves at my local bottle shop but I ran into the distributor's rep who clued me in to some 1 liter bottles stashed in the back room.
Picked up a bottle of the Antique 107 for $35. Yippee yo kai yay! :thmbsp:

Currently sipping a bit of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage (86 proof). Each bottle is date-tagged, this one spent 10 years in the oak before bottling.
Pretty tasty stuff for just under $30....:thmbsp:
