Favorite Bourbon

ANY variant of PVW is unobtainum.

Recently saw an episode of "The Layover" (with Anthony Bourdain) that was filmed in Seattle. They were in a swanky restaurant, and Tony asked the waitress if they had any Pappy`s on hand....she replied that they had a bottle of 20-year old. He ordered it "with one rock, please"....(no mention of price).

People like him are why we can't have nice things.

Broke down & purchased some Glencairne glasses off Amazon. Designed for sipping your whiskey neat, I got tired of taking down the brandy snifters. First I poured some Old Weller Antique, the glass does concentrate the aromas, as promised. I then rinsed out the glass and poured in some Bernheim Wheat Whiskey. That might have the softest mouth feel of any whiskey I have tried. I have to say I enjoyed using the glass, although I wish it was slightly larger, although that would only increase my consumption.

I was also able to acquire, through a buddy of mine, some Willett Pot Still @ $38 & a bottle of Weller Special Reserve 1.75ml @ $30, they were out of both W.L. Weller 12 year & "Antique". Adding some depth to the bunker.

Regarding the Bernheim I thought it was a good thing. Since I prefer Wheated bourbons I thought I would like to try a Wheat Whiskey. Some whiskies have an antiseptic feel or taste to them, which comes off as sharp or dry. This one strikes me as mellow.

I was strictly Knob Creek before I tried Weller. Love the wheat. Can't imagine drinking anything else.

I finally found Weller Special Reserve on the shelf (for $20!) and bought all 3 bottles at my store. I've been keeping an eye out for it for quite awhile. I love the Weller 12-year as well (tried it at a bar) and I would buy it without question, but have never seen it on the shelf.

I recently finished a bottle of Bernheim as well. As a "Wheat Whiskey" its primary grain is wheat, which (in my perception) gives a lot of caramel flavor over a bready background. I agree with RT fan that it has a silky mouthfeel. Good stuff.

The Weller is a "Wheated Bourbon", so I presume that it has primarily corn in its mashbill. The caramel flavors are more restrained than the Bernheim and the mouthfeel is thinner. I love the crispness of this Bourbon, and with an ice cube I find it very refreshing. I've heard people say that the Special Reserve lacks "complexity", but I find it to be a perfect everyday sipper.

If I can continue to find Weller SR for $20 it will definitely be my go-to Bourbon (and a good contrast to the Bulleit Rye that I always keep on hand). I would probably try some other whiskeys before I buy Bernheim again (for $35 at my store), but it is quite good!

To be bourbon, the mashbill has to be a minimum 51% corn.

That Sazerac has continued to market the Weller line as a mid-shelf line is a thing of amazement... and worthy of giving thanks.

I missed out on some Pappy's yet again! Several local Liquor Barns received a limited amount of the 20, 15, and 12 year and sold them this morning. People camped out last night to buy them up. Oh well, looks like I'll have to wait until the fall release.

I have given up completely on looking for Pappy's, too bad. At the prices I have been seeing I am tempted to sell my sealed 20year and fund my bourbon intake for the next decade.

Currently comparing 3 different 100 proof Bonded bourbons.
Old Grand Dad (my favorite)
Jim Beam (very smooth and quite enjoyable)
Evan Williams White (more of a burn quality)

The OGD BIB is good stuff. Often overlooked. Getting ready to sip a little Elijah Craig 12.

Mulligan, Desmond, Weller & Water yesterday afternoon. All smooth ! !

I think I dozed off. I don't remember track 4 ending and track 5 beginning.

Well to celebrate the Kentucky Derby I dispensed with the usual Mint Juleps & went instead for bourbon neat. Started with a Four Roses, moved to Angel's Envy & followed that with a Weller 12. A very tasty flight if I do say so myself.

I had Firing Line in the office pool, was in it until the last furlong.

After a couple of hours working in the yard today I decided to listen. I poured 1 finger of Weller 12, added a half cube of ice and a tiny bit of water.

I put on my Fleetwood Mack CD, my compilation starting with my favorite song by them, "Albatross." The first 1/3 of the disk is all English and soon I was asleep. A well deserved nap.

Well just so happened to have some leftover mix"nnn for Mint Juleps so did not want to waste a drop....

Weller 7/107 and the mixings ice and a metal cup.

had some Four Roses Single Barrel on Saturday night. That is some really good bourbon. The burnt orange note is prevalent on the finish.

Spoke with my local Booze Merchant today. She got in some Weller 12 and set aside a couple of bottles for me.

She told me they got a bulletin from Sazerac/Buffalo Trace about the future of Weller 12 KSBW (and the Weller line).

1) The recipe/proofs will not be changed (still Weller, still at 86, 86 "12", and 107).
2) Allocation will continued to be very limited.
3) The price point will not change.

PM, Have you checked out the new liquor store at 967/1626 yet? I haven't had a need to stop in yet.

I'm waiting for the Central Market to open.

Seriously, I didn't know there was a liquor emporium there. Chain or doomed Indie?

Probably doomed indie...

They just opened last week - they are also supposed to have a deli and some dining area.

Just west of the fire hall on 967 in a new little strip thing. I was surprised when I read about it a few months back but there's always someone to try to make a go of it.

Probably can't be a worse idea than a food truck park on 967. Got one of those, too.
