Favorite Bourbon

Weller & Elmer T Lee has all but disappeared from the shelves of the liquor stores I frequent to say nothing of PVW products. What has replaced them is a bunch of never heard of before brands at high prices & dubious quality. While they were at it they jacked the price of Eagle Rare from $29.99 to $39.99.
At the rate quality bourbon is disappearing around here, I might just buy a bunch of Four Roses Single Barrel & throw in the towel.

Or...

:D

BTW, it's illegal!

I have decided you need to be on a "list" to get 12. I checked weekly for months, the they said I could get an email when it arrived. I gave it and after a month called. They said it had arrived and it was gone. I raised hell. They found a 1.75l bottle in the back.

It doesn't go on the shelves here.

Same here. But right now Weller SR is on the shelves and plentiful. $20 for 0.75 lt and $30 for 1.75 lt. (hard choice).

Picked up a 750ml of Jim Beam Bonded for another $3 & change over the Ol Grandad Bonded,
A bit smoother without the snot run I usually get from the rye of OGD
Also got a 375ml of Beam's 8 star,Can see why it's bottom shelf,It'll take me a week to gag through that ****.

Since I live in Central KY (Lexington) or right in horse and bourbon country I have access to pretty much any kind at decent prices. I know other states are taxed and the price is a bit higher. Makers has always been a staple. Woodford is very good also but recently Knob Creek has been a favorite and Evan Williams Single Barrel. EW is very easy to drink and I now refer to it as "crack" lol. Very very smooth to say the least and not that expensive. Elmer T Lee is another really good one but very hard to find because as soon as it hits the shelves its gone.

I forgot to add WL Weller. The Special Reserve is one hell of a bourbon at its price point. Locally its about $15 for a 750 mL.

The EW 1783 is a decent pour. Also bought some Blanton's which was a step up and a very good sipper.

Weller Antique
Original 107 Brand

Stopped by the new mega-wine-and-more-liquor-emporium in Sodom-On-The-Colorado today. Prices were all over the place (mostly too high), but they had great prices on Weller SR and Antique. $26 for 1.75 SR, and $22 for .75 107.

They claim they'll have some 12 next week.

Weller is under the radar in my opinion. The 107 is a very good bourbon. I went to bourbon taste at Buffalo Trace several months ago and they featured Weller. It was a good night :)

Frankfort is not too far from Lexington. Hmmm, I have a 30 year old nephew and his wife in Lexington. He likes Bourbon sampling too.

No its only 30 minutes. Antique 107 is good bourbon. Someone told me it resembles Pappy Van Winkle but I can't confirm that statement. Buffalo Trace did mention a shortage at the tasting but not as detailed as the statement you linked. :(

I asked my local store about VOB, and was told that occasionally, they'll get a half-dozen bottles, and they sell out immediately. Further, they do not offer a "list" or hold product. The store gets shipments on Wednesday, so I'll check after work today.

Depending on how close you are to Kentucky, you could just drive down, it's $8 around here and on the shelf at every Walmart/grocery/CVS/liquor store/gas station you cross. Buy 10 or so bottles to make it worth your trip. :D

Robotuner,

Not to mention that with 10 bottles when he crosses the state line he becomes a felon. :yikes:

Well, maybe not if he convinces the revenue boys they are for personal consumption. :thmbsp:

I am not going to deny I was in on some state line transfers a few decades back but the statute of limitations has run out.

From what I know, they pretty much don't enforce that law in Ohio anymore. They wouldn't nick you for 10 bottles of $8 bourbon. I wouldn't go higher than that though, and I'd definitely put them in the trunk no matter what.

Finished off my bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel. That is some fine bourbon right there, although I am more of a "Wheater" fan the FRSB is well worth the tariff.

I can un-confirm it...it doesnt.

The 12 year has a slight resemblance to Lot B, not quite.

I bow to your superior knowledge/taster, but I beg to disagree a bit.

Being as the Weller 12 and the VW 'Lot B' are both the same juice (and age, but VW does get first pick of the barrels... which is no small thing), my last side-by-side comparison (about 2 years ago) had the Weller 12 VERY close to the 'Lot B'. Very close.

90+% of the taste for 1/3rd of the price, perhaps. It was enough to cause me to quit chasing down 'Lot B'.

My last 107 side-by-side comparison (6 years ago?) definitely skewed to the ORVW... and that was back when Weller 107 was still aged-dated at 7 years (10 for the ORVW). But even then, the Weller was close, but three more years in the wood told the tale.

Of course, YMMV.

Cheers!
