Favorite Bourbon

Thanks to this thread I found out about the Weller Special Reserve. I found it locally for $19. I'm interested to see how good it is at that price.

To me, the Weller SR belongs on the bottom shelf with, say, Old Crow. I'd been hoping to find something inexpensive that drinks better straight than Evan Williams black label, but I find the Weller SR mildly offensive even in most cocktails.

It's a good pour that many tastings place above Maker's Mark.

But you gotta like WHEATED bourbon (I do).

Try Very Old Barton 86 proof (or 90 if it's available... or the 100 BIB).

Barton does NO advertising, and is generally considered a 'trade' whiskey. Every man needs a good trade.

I'd say by the time it comes up for destruction there won't be a sealed bottle there.

Spoke with my local Booze Merchant today. She got in some Weller 12 and set aside a couple of bottles for me.

She told me they got a bulletin from Sazerac/Buffalo Trace about the future of Weller 12 KSBW (and the Weller line).

1) The recipe/proofs will not be changed (still Weller, still at 86, 86 "12", and 107).
2) Allocation will continued to be very limited.
3) The price point will not change.
Dagsnabitt....my closest hooch monger never gets allotted with any 12. This has been going on for two years now. Green with envy I ams. And now even the SR has dried up on his run...I'm Weller parched. :tears:

I used to drive 80 miles to get my bottled Pearl Beer. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

lol... wurd!

I've had my Weller feelers out encompassing a 200 mile radius for a good while. Buptkiss!

Occasionally a "close" store in Charlotte (just a 10 mile run across the border) will get some SR on the shelf. But with traffic it's a "desperate" hour+ ordeal indeed. Alas, of late I'm even deprived of that adventure.

I have decided you need to be on a "list" to get 12. I checked weekly for months, the they said I could get an email when it arrived. I gave it and after a month called. They said it had arrived and it was gone. I raised hell. They found a 1.75l bottle in the back.

It doesn't go on the shelves here.

I asked my local store about VOB, and was told that occasionally, they'll get a half-dozen bottles, and they sell out immediately. Further, they do not offer a "list" or hold product. The store gets shipments on Wednesday, so I'll check after work today.

Weller & Elmer T Lee has all but disappeared from the shelves of the liquor stores I frequent to say nothing of PVW products. What has replaced them is a bunch of never heard of before brands at high prices & dubious quality. While they were at it they jacked the price of Eagle Rare from $29.99 to $39.99.
At the rate quality bourbon is disappearing around here, I might just buy a bunch of Four Roses Single Barrel & throw in the towel.
