Favorite Bourbon

The above was in response to "Never, I use Old Grandad for cleaning LPs."

I should have said Stillbrook. We called it Stillbirth in college. But, strangely, it was good with just a splash of water.

What I wanted to say today was that I want to drink Weller (Special Reserve) for a daily Bourbon but it is just too damned expensive ($45/1.75l here). I wish I could find something at the $30 point for a daily sipper.

Well not a bourbon.. but my cousin Jimmy, a Rye fan was over on Saturday and after dinner I busted out my bottle of Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, which he had never had before. I forgot how good that stuff is! Too bad the bottle is nearly gone and realistically I will never come across it again.

I like rye - a local distillery Catoctin Creek has a very nice Roundstone Rye. Been enjoying Jefferson Reserve lately and Evan Williams.

Find it. $22 for the 1.75 lt. here in Texas.

Old Overholt (aka/"Old Overcoat") produces a pretty decent Rye at a very reasonable price....worth a try, if you can find it....

I tell you PM, I have never seen VOB on a shelf here in NYC. I'll check again next time shopping for bourbon. Chuck Cowdery implied it is his house bourbon.

I have tried Old Overholt & found it a little rough around the edges. While not a rye fan per se, I do think Rittenhouse BIB is one of the great whiskey bargains in the world today.

Are there any Wheaters that are cheaper? Does wheat cost that much?

Not any GOOD ones. Rebel Yell is a wheater, and it's cheap. It uses the same mash bill as Weller does (as does Van Winkle), but somehow Heaven Hill messes it up. The RY 80 proof is best used for cleaning LPs, and the 90 proof Rebel Reserve just doesn't taste very interesting (to me).

In Ye Olden Tymes (1970s - 90s), real Rebel Yell from Stitzel-Weller was my go-to bourbon.

Ya' gotta bend WAY down to find it. We're talking BOTTOM shelf. That's hard on an old guy like me.

I was told when I worked at Barton Brands which is now owned by Sazerac which owns Buffalo Trace which bottles Weller, that Very Old Barton 86 was a very good bourbon for the price. I also noticed that Rebel Yell is bottled in the same bottle that Weller Special Reserve so yes its a wheat based bourbon. Weller Special Reserve has always been my go to bourbon but here in KY its cheaper than other states so I feel for you guys who have to pay more :(

Shoot! I'm not that far from KY. About an hour. All of 3 hours to Lexington where my nephew and his wife and child live. Next time we are up I'll let you know. Then you can show me a good liquor store and we can listen for an hour or two.

Not any more. When Sazerac bought the Weller brand, Heaven Hill bought the Rebel Yell brand. Different distillery, and a different bottle.

Too bad.

I will do that!

BTW, I drank Rebel Yell back in 1967-8. I bought some a few years back and it was a great let down. Maybe I should try a small bottle to see if that was a fluke.

Don't waste your money on Rebel Yell. It's cheap for a reason (low on age, high on water content). Evan Williams Black Label costs the same and is a MUCH better bourbon.

Rebel Reserve (90 proof) has a mid/premium price, but doesn't match the less expensive Weller SR for taste (or proof).
