Favorite Bourbon

Jim Beam. <that's a period

$21.95 @ Sam's per 1.75l

Don't get me wrong there are "better" bourbons that can be bought but not for this kind of money. YMMV but if you don't agree, you're wrong. ;D

I've had 'bout all of them, I really am big on the distillers series that Buffalo Trace puts out yearly, (George stag and Sazerac 17 especially, but the William larue weller, Eagle rare 17 and E.H. handy are incredible in there own right) when I can find them. When I can't, I like the lower tier versions of all those... with Elmer T, Rock Hill farms, Basil Hayden, Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon and Rittenhouse Rye thrown in there for honorable mention. Everyday/Old fashioned/Manhattan fodder would be Maker's, of course, or the buffalo trace 10 yr, or the four roses yellow, or the Elijah Craig 10yr, but most friends that visit get Short Mountain Shine... since the distillery is about five miles from my house.

I usually bounce between Bourbon, Scotch, and Cognac/Armagnac/Calvados depending on mood, and wifey likes tequila, but that's a whole nuther thread. :)

Yesterday afternoon I poured some of my cherished Weller 12, added water and went to listen to Modern Jazz Quartet Live at Carnegie Hall (MOFI pressing).

This is great music! It is an odd mix with the vibes dead in the right channel, the drums from just inside the right speaker to almost the center. The bass and piano are faded strongly toward the left but not into the left speaker.

The center fill comes when there is applause it fills from right to left.

To pile on..... George Dickel, "The other Tennessee Whiskey." Does have a bit of sweetness to it (?maple barrels maybe)...

Way back in the day you couldn't get Rebel Yell way up north (state run liquor stores didn't carry it), rumor was it couldn't be gotten north of the Mason Dixon line so a trucker friend of mine used to bring home a case at a time. ..... at the time most "enjoyments" seemed to taste better if they were a bit illegal, well, you know what I mean....

Temperatures didn't get out of the 50's this weekend, so I had to bust out my inaugural fall whiskey. Angel's Envy, neat. Just as good as I remember it last Spring. I usually wait until "the frost is on the pumpkin" to break out the brown, but it was 60 degrees in the house on Friday night & needed something to ward off the chill.

I just picked up a bottle of Henry McKenna 10-year old, single barrel, bottled-in-bond (100 proof). It's apparently the only extra-aged single barrel, bottled-in-bond on the market today. Supposedly, it has the same mash bill as Evan Williams Single Barrel and Elijah Craig. I have a bottle of Evan Williams 10-year single barrel on hand, so a comparison is in order though I'll have to adjust for the difference in strength (86 vs 100 proof). I'll report back on my findings.

Just had this at a BBQ place in Chicago. Bought a bottle before I left. Highly recommended!

Laphroaig has the greatest nickname in Whiskeydom, "Tiger's Claws". The iodine & sea air attack is too radical for me, not that I haven't tried to fight my way through it.

You may be a candidate for the smoother Caol Ila. Very smooth with only a touch of peat and smoke.

On another bourbon note, I noticed Elijah Craig has taken its 12 year old label off of the front label and moved it to the back label. Hope they don't cut the age on this fine little bourbon!

Without a doubt: Rockhill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon.

This is the most flavorsome and interestingly complex (yet never challengingly so) bourbon I have ever had the grace of passing my lips. Sheer nectar of the Gods. If you have never had any, you owe it to yourself as a bourbon drinker to try some. It's that good. It's not always the easiest bourbon to find, but the rewards of finding a bottle will be greeted by an experience that is worthy of your time and effort, I assure you. Highly recommended! GO AND FIND SOME NOW!!! lolz :P

^Yeah, Rock Hill Farms is special stuff. The range, depth and nuance of flavors is insane, and the development of flavors on the palate is stunning. I also like Blanton's Special Reserve too. But for me, Rock Hill Farms is the cat's ass IMHO. lol :P
