How do you pronounce "AUX"

You look at this knob everyday. I understand that AUX is short for auxiliary but most people refer to it as the abbreviation, AUX.
Do you pronounce it like "OX" or like "OH"?

Never heard it called 'oh'. Makes sense that such a pronunciation might be more common among French speakers.

I'm with you on this. I suppose people from Maine call it "Ayux" and New Hampshire people call it "Ayawks" (Of course, people from South Boston would then call it "Yawks" ).

I wonder if people from NYC and Jersey call it "Owks" (You know, like "Awwdi" for Audi instead of "Owwdi").

The "au" sounds like the "aw" in "dawn." The "x" sounds like "ks". Therefore "awx" or "awks" should convey the pronunciation well enough. Basically, it is the first part of the word "auxilliary", and should sound the same as the first syllable of that word, as normally pronounced. The vowel sound in "aux" should rhyme with the vowel sound in words like taut, distraught, or even ought/bought/brought.

"Ox" is actually different: the short "o" in it should rhyme with the short "o" in words like hot, got, lot, and trot.


Incidentally, the same vowel sound (without any consonants) in Cantonese can mean to squeeze out or extrude, the way stuff comes out of a sausage-stuffing machine, or (and it is used this way regularly) the way you push sh*t out of your anus. It is also used, with a different tone, as a response when someone tells you what to do, sort like "okay, I got it, and will do that." (Yeah, it must be a slow day... ).
