IndyCar 2023

One of my regrets in life is when I was at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, I didn't make the short trip to Indy for qualifying 1972 or 3

The 85 lap Indy road course is bit more of a tire pit timing challenge from other race strategies where the Red wall primary tires are the choice but the race rules are you must run the alternate (black wall) tires at least once and this is where you'd lose pit time grid position but also race pace interval. Plus there was only one early lap yellow incident making strategy more critical.

Palou wins keeping a 30 laps to go lead and finishes with a 15 sec. interval over O'ward.

Indianapolis 500 Practice and Qualifying this weekend. Schedule http://tvracer.com/ Sat. and Sun. Qualifying listed.
Watching "Fast Friday" in progress (Fastest lap out 4)

Initial benchmarks so far. SATO tops out with a 234.753 on Alternate white stripe, Qualifying will likely be on Primary red so speeds will be faster.

with 3.5 hours to go: Fastest 4 lap Avg. (qualifying format) Sato still holds fastest lap.

Qualifying day 1 Top 12: With about 45 min. to go Rosenquist pulls an outstanding fastest lap while Tony Kanaan (Tony's last race and Qualifying this year) also comes back into the 12 pack taking 6th. As you can see this top 12 was within 100ths and 10ths.

ALEX PALOU takes the pole after setting the fastest pole time in Indy500 History!.. not to mention $100k pole prize. Team mate Veekay takes second by only 6/1000ths of a second! I thought Rosenquist who was the strongest in practices and took the "Fast 12" would take "Fast 6" pole but slipped a corner on lap 3 but did grab front row position.

British Indy 500 racers Katherine Legge and Stefan Wilson collided in the first big crash in practice for the Indianapolis 500 on Monday.
Coming out of turn 1-2 Legge makes tire contact with Wilson who in the replay appeared to be slowing and sends him near dead on into the wall. Legge got out of her car but Wilson required assistance and stretcher and gave a thumbs up as he was put into the ambulance.

I don't like the new format. Should be Pole Day and Bump Day like it was before.
Technically it still is. Sat. Qualifying/ 30 Grid spots. Sunday final qualifying with fast 12 and Fast 6 plus P30,31 and 32 with 4 cars battling it out to make the grid. Another change is if a car goes out again to improve Q position their previous time is deleted. i.e. Tony Kanaan got bumped out of the Fast 12 but made another run to get back into 6th place but qualified 9th in the Fast 12.

Newgarden pulls off a one lap shoot out after 3 Red Flags in the last 20 laps to go. Throw in green flag pit lane collisions and drivers seemly ignoring gas conservation and going to the limit the majority of the race. replay is up on Full Race Replays...
I'll give it a watch and post up some pics for the highlights.

Palau really had the stuff. He, Power and maybe Kirkwood seemed to be the fastest.
Pato O'Ward with another iffy move that crashed him out.

Grojeans up to his old self, wrecking cars.

I watched the race and both NXT races.. that BUMPY street course is mostly one car narrow and the only favorable sector to offer a pass was the main straight and turn1 many over shot out of position into the run off. It took no time for spent rubber and 'marbles' to build up and both those drivers lost front wheel traction with nowhere to go but the wall and they were not the only crashes either. Drivers were fighting the steering wheel as much as each other!
