JBL Dynamics Project - Initial discussions

In theory, the dispersion should be wider if you turn those 90 degrees..., at least until you get some horns on them.
Thanks Todd.
I'm not planning to play them much - brief testing is all. I just ordered the coated diaphrams from The Speaker Exchange. JBL part # D8R2452sl,
since I've heard that warms the sound up a bit, and I'll finalize the payment for the (used) JohnW Walnut horns I am buying soon ...
Its basically a winter project, I'm just lining up the parts I'll need before we get our snows ... ;)

The D8R2452SL diaphragm will drop right in to the 2445.
Thanks grey, that's great to know!

It's a seriously long driver isn't it? I had to measure the depth of my 4333 cabinets with the new crossover board screwed to the back behind it. Just cleared by less then a quarter inch.

Thanks Todd.

Hi Heather,

Do you have an experts confirmation that the diaphragms you've ordered can be integrated into your 2445 driver??

As far as I know, ( without hands-on experience for that specific diaphragm ), it comes without any internal mounting screws on the plastic ring.
- Those screws are necessary to grab the existing "fork-type" connectors that you've got on the wire-ends that are attached to back-cap of that driver.

Have you asked "subwoof" his opinion ??

:)

OKAY, scratch my concern. It appears it does ship with fully functioning terminals.

There's an add-on kit that makes this diaphragm work with the 2452-type back-cap.

See;

Can confirm the coated 2452 diaphragms work in the conventional drivers. I run some D16R2451SL diaphragms in 2450SL (1.5" exit snoutless as opposed to the 2" exit 2450 with snout), but they are, of course, discontinued. Bought some of the coated 2452 as backup. I can't imagine blowing those diaphragms and living to tell about it, but you never know.

Maybe more range to replace the 2245 in a 4345 when the surrounds fail?
The sensitivity is down a bit and the ability to bi-amp can address that part. Not sure about the rest of the parameters. Ken has reproduced the cone kits, so we're safe for now.

I already had the 4507 cabinets and will probably be using those for the 2216. The volume is 5 cubes which is very close to the monitor volume. The tuning is 40hz which should be fine as I'm handing off to subwoofers. If not, the ports would need to be manipulated to bring them closer to ideal.
Compared it to the L200, the 4507 would bring the woofer closer to the horn and further from the floor. I know that they're not what you're looking for in aesthetics. I think it was someone here that stripped and veneered them.

I've also had a thought about your crossovers. They are probably designed for a 16 ohm c.d. Maybe dropping in more padding resistance for an 8 ohm will work fine. Hopefully the voices of experience with passives can better guide you on that.

Sweet!
Now for the Cabinets:rolleyes:
Although those Heath cabinets do look around 5 Cu Ft:cool:
You already stiffened and corrected their shortcomings.

I know - it's so tempting since they are already here -
but first I'd have to strip off that dark faux-moroccan finish (that I hate!),
and re-stain them to match those gorgeous wood horns ...
And the woofers are mounted low in those boxes - all wrong!

Plus I'd have to sell the Altec Valencia drivers, which are fine, but not in my plans ...

Probably get close to what your asking price, just for the drivers and X-overs, also take into account
Not having to get new cabs, and modding them. But I get it they are a New JBL Project.

Yeah, I could live with that cool grill cloth once I empty the cabinets and mount the woofers to the front panel.
The Horns would be external, of course ...
Macaroonie has been telling me I need to go with a fully active crossover with this system ...
swing for the fences so to speak!
I've got some catch-up reading to do on the BSS gear ...

Its very tempting

No triode option on the Jolida? Waaay better on the horns.
All my tube amps Run Triode on My horn speakers.
always a wider sound stage.
Just 3 watts on those big drivers n horns will chase you out of the Room!

I got the integrated Jolida while I had the previous L200 3 ways. Direct fed. Passive xover. Worked well. I liked, even on The Who.

Yes I get that, Full range with Passive X-over.
Bi-amped with that tube amp just on the horns ?
different story

I still haven’t decided if I want to complicate this system with all that - on top of the shelves, in our living room.
Yes, that would take it to ne plus ultra - but …
its hard enough now to find gear space up there.
Not a SAF/WAF issue, just a reality check here.
And if that BSS gear is windows only …?
(I don't see any MAC versions, and I'm not buying a Windows laptop just for it)

(Sorry, mostly enjoying this glorious day outside - 74 degrees and sunny, if a bit breezy)

You can always run a windows VM with your Mac

No, I get that - I had VMware Fusion running on my older macPro for ages ... its not really the same.
Last time I fired it up it wanted me to reregister Windows all over again, and the dial-in registration wasn't working,
so it wanted me to buy Windows all over again. Since I didn't have an urgent need for windows, just an interest in running it, I passed.
Checked my old emails that was Fusion 7 back in 2015.
I think I'd need to spend money to get VMware fusion updated and running again, plus find a copy of windows to run.
I'll dig further next week - tomorrow I'll do the diaphragms ...
