Wrong woofers, or wrong cone kit in the right woofers. Questionable recone with an oversized dustcap.
That's just what sticks out from the pic posted. JBL made/makes quite a few 15" woofers, these speakers don't have the ones they should.
Pull the woofers where we can see what the baskets are.

if there is a problem with the woofers find a reputable JBL service center and have converted to 2235's.
the risers are an non issue as well. If you or know someone with limited woodworking experience replacement is very easy. They are only particle board with black paint on them, a regular stick of wood from lumber yard would hold up better.
As mentioned, if the cabs are in good shape, the rest of drivers are correct and good, and x-overs are correct or improved. Your 90% of the way to a pair of lifetime keepers

I wouldn't say that just yet. Most of the L300s that come up these days seem to have incorrect woofer loads, but the woofers are probably the easiest driver to correct.
Don't freak out, look for the posts by faber12, he was recently in the same boat. Knowing what the baskets are will be the first step.
The good news is that the (nearly) unobtanium tweeters are there. To me, that's a bigger hurdle than the woofers.

For a flip it may not be a great deal unless you can do a good job fixing them up - for someone that wants them to keep and fix them a great deal- there have been a couple pair from s Florida that have languished on eBay for an extended period of time and they were pristine - a recone will cost a couple hundred dollars if the baskets are correct-

The woofer surrounds are wrong and the dust cap is wrong for nearly any JBL driver I can think of. It could just be that some hack did a re-surround and didn't have the right surround and destroyed the dust-cap shimming the v.c. so he stuck a larger generic piece of junk on there.
When you've pulled the woofer and can tell us what the label says we'll know more. I wouldn't say you did badly, just that they'll need a bit of work. The ad said one grille was messed up so that shouldn't have been a surprise. Can't imagine that'll take much to sort out though.

So BiGJay, please go to your user settings and add your hometown to the settings -
I can't speak helpfully to someone if I don't know where they live ...
something like selling the Big JBLs are all about your local market ...
sure, if you know what you are doing you can ship them anywhere,
but most newer folks don't know how to do it right ...
(and if you are new to big JBLs you are new folks)
It doesn't sound like they are that bad - they just need some work, as any major speaker more than 30 years old would ...
Grills can be redone, you can get a pair of 2234 or 2235 woofers to drop in them, maybe redo the crossover caps -
and with a small amount of work, you can have REALLY nice speakers for WELL under 3k
Redoing the particle board base isn't a big deal - I actually made some bases with wheels out of 2x4s,
painted them black, and had a pair of L200s (very similar big JBLs) on them for 7 years - made them MUCH easier to live with!

As has been said, hang in there, don't panic and take your time. Plenty of veteran JBL guys/gals here that, as you now know, will help you along.
One issue you will likely run into is the L-pads. Those are controlled by the two slotted knobs on the front baffle. Being in humid Florida, humidity can be their enemy and they are directly in the signal path. Once you get them up and running, try working them back and fourth and see if there is any static or brief loss of sound. If so, they will have to be removed and cleaned. If that happens, let us know and we can guide you through how to do it. I have done one pair and it is a bit of a chore getting them out but that can be discussed later.
Congrats on getting what a lot of audio nuts, me included, believe is one of the best consumer speakers ever made!:thmbsp:

But a 2235 doesn't have the accordion surround, it's supposed to be foam. Somebody cobbled these into a franken-woofer.
Worse things have happened, and getting them done up to proper 2235H won't break the bank.
I'd just play em while you get the cosmetics sorted out and save up for an authorized recone.

A real JBL 2235 re-cone kit would have already had the correct surround attached. Is that "pencil" white pencil/chalk, or regular pencil. A better photo including one with enough detail to show the markings on the back of the cone would help. This feels a lot like pulling teeth to me. The cat's out of the bag. Show us the goods!
