LE14A vs LE14H-1 sensitivity

turnitdown

Well-worn member
Despite being quite able to search, my efforts came up empty-handed.

Can someone definitively tell me the sensitivity of the LE14A and the LE14H-1?

I really appreciate it and apologize for such a basic question.

Thank you.

I believe both to be 93 DB
with the Later H having a higher rated Power ability

93db on the LE14A & H and about 92db on the LE14H1. The H1 is a touch less and can be seen in the reference effiency

The EDS sheets for both the Le14H and the Le14H-1 are in the "Transducers" sub-forum over at LHF .

The Le14H-1 looks to be 90db to these eyes ( with Le14H being @ 93db ).

:)

Thanks. I went there, looked in the wrong spot. Also looking for LE!4A

There was no EDS sheet published for the Le14A.

It's widely accepted that the Le14H is the Le14A with a different magnetic assembly.

Personally ( for home usage ) I think the Le14H is the best of the lot ( followed by the Le14a > which has slightly "softer" attack >> "jump factor", to my ears ).

:)

The LE14H-1, IIRC, has a longer voice coil winding, and a heavier coat of Aquaplas on the cone, compared to the LE14H and LE14A.

The sensitivity being about 90dB for the LE14H-1, also jibes with the sensitivity of the 250Ti, also being 90dB. The woofer would be the limiting factor in that.

Here is why I asked originally. I have the 4430 tops over the LE14H-1s and they don't sound as good as the LE14As. I believe it's the sensitivity. If I give up 3dB on the low end, it seems that the speakers can become shouty. I can either go with the LE14H-1s and add an Lpad to the top end OR sub in the LE14As and have a sensitivity match.

What would you do?

There’s a couple of ways you can use to make the Le14’s any series to get close to the output of a 2235
Port the cabinet for the 14’s to go down deep
And then reduce the output of the horns either with the L
Pads or an additional resistor.
Then throw more power at the speakers.
A Passive Radiator PR 15 as used in the
L220’s works very well
instead of a port.
A benefit of using the Le14’s
Instead of 2235’s is Better Lower midrange.
A serious defect Known to Some
With 15” Foam edge woofers and trying to get them to play well much past 500cps let alone 1,000
The Jbl midange Veil.
I have a plan to use 2 le14’s in
Tower’s like the earlier K.2 9500’s
With the horns and Xovers from the 4435’s
But with a Smaller footprint than even the 4430's.
For my Smaller Living Room
I would use my pair of nos pr15’s for the
Bottom cabinet a LA AR9’s
Have fun with your project
Any Le14 is a great speaker
Make them work

Thanks. I will put the LE14As back in the four ft. sq. cab that is tuned to 33 (-3dB @ 32 Hz.) I like the LE14H-1 but don't love it. The LE14As seem more suited to the duty.

Just curious turnitdown , What are you using for Power? SS or tube amps?
Big room or small. BTW I have 4430's with the orig 2235's.
While they were out getting their 2nd set of Foam edges in 35 yrs.
I popped in a pair of JBL D140R's with the Big Cloth surrounds.
Similar cones and surrounds as the 2216ND's that are the Pricey new upgrades, for
L-200's 300's, and others.
The speakers sounded much better Balanced, and I had to change the settings on the L-pads.
Also more efficient, and a Little more tube friendly.
With little to No Loss in Bass response. the 2235's are back in, but
They don't make the rotation much any more, and will probably be sold off.

I am using, right now, a Luxman R-117 for power. I rotate it with the Hammond AO58-1 which is a Dynaco ST70 circuit, point=to-point wired by Hammond. My MAC4300-V will be coming back from Bob, totally restored, and it will go in in place of the Luxman which I will also send to Bob for a complete going through.

The room is rather large (which is why I like the 100x100 degree horns)

I can use any flavor of LE14 as long as I can level match with the horns. That may be as simple as putting the LE14As back in, or adding an L-pad in front of the HF circuit, or bi-amping (really don't want to Bi-amp.

I had the 4430s and LOVED them, but I wanted to be able to change the form factor. I have 4 sq, ft, Barzilays cabinets in which the LE14s reside and the horns sit in a pod on top.

I did the crossovers right by building the exact 4430 circuit for the top and each LE14 has their own crossover matched for crossover frequency and a different impedance correction circuit for each flavor of LE14.

I don't miss the 4430s because I have their sound right here.

What would you do?

I would be inclined to bi-amp. Run one amp on the 4430s, and a larger amp (say twice the power) on the LE14H-1s. That should balance out things pretty well.

Also, an active crossover between the two, will allow both amps to run more efficiently.

Regards,
Gordon.

I have a plan if I bi-amp. Gordon, what are your thoughts on putting an Lpad right before the 4430 HF section?

When you say you have 4430 top sections do you mean just the 2344 horn/drivers combo
and X-overs? or just the horns. Those horns need the EQ circuit in the x-overs for them to sound Balanced.
there are 2 -L-pads in each.

I have the horns, the correct drivers and the correct crossover. The LE14 variants will perform as well as a 2235 in the correctly sized/tuned cabinet.

I took GordonW's advice and bi-amped. I have the Luxman R-117 running the 4430 tops (2344 horns/2426 w/Radian aluminum diaphragms and correct 4430 HF crossovers) and the Crown XLS402 running the bottom LE14H-1s.

Much better. I was able to sensitivity match the LF and HF sections perfectly. I'll put the calibrated mic on them and run the through REW a little later.
