Call me old fashioned................but this is what I like as a ride................I'd have one, but the prices got a little silly a few yrs back.

Thanks to a guy by the name of Jay Bittle (here's looking at you kid), I drove something similar to this on the way to the 1975 Liberty Bowl.

As far as the game, we had our hats handed to us, but we didn't lose the 'halftime'.

That's my little runabout...my first car! It's 17 years old - almost as old as me - and cost a grand total of £50 ($100) from ebay.

Needed a new slave cylinder, a brake line and a CV boot to get 'er roadworthy again, and so far it's been very reliable. Does about 45-50mpg, which is all the better when fuel is $10 a gallon. I carry a little Palm Pilot with a spreadsheet program in the glovebox to record how many miles between fill-ups.

I changed the head gasket last week, so it's stopped drinking water faster than a camel and now runs even smoother. The actual job would have taken only a few hours if it wasn't for VW using a special head on the head bolts...I spent a good day tracking one down. :sigh:

And the best thing is, with the seats folded down there's enough space for a surprising amount of audio gear. Nothing like a pickup truck, but good enough. I managed to squeeze a small console and a pair of good sized speakers in there!

I've been drooling over all the awesome cars you guys have in this thread...and Simi's two-wheeler.

'95 Chevy S-10 LS. Multi-valve L4 with 5 speed stick. Get's 28 mpg and is still fun to drive.

I bought it new in 77. It's very close to stock with just a few changes. Any parts that I have changed, I still have the original ones, just in case!

Hmmm, this might be the only picture on my hard drive that shows my daily driver.

21 mpg on my city commute, 27 on the x-way. I sure do hate to disappoint all of the "experts" who I'm sure are convinced it's a horrible car, but the only thing that scares me about it is the fact it's now gone 207,000 miles without replacing ANYTHING under the hood, including belts/hoses, which I know should have been replaced by now. Even the battery is at least 5 years old.

I know something will have to fail eventually, but I hate the idea of blindly throwing parts at it. So I think I'll just sell it and find another with low mileage. :thmbsp:

The part I like best is that I don't have to give up anything to get "decent" mileage. I'd rather be mistaken for an old man than some punk-kid, or broke middle-ager driving a disposable econobox rated number "1" by a magazine that also rates tampons and toasters. I could afford something newer if I wanted, but like Howard Hughes, I refuse to invest in depreciating assets!
