My '69 4-4-2 has 10.5:1 and we get ethanol-free 94 octane around here, but I'll tell you this: if I want to run a reasonable advance curve, I still need to use an octane booster.

@noogies I cant imagine the cost associated with driving a 442 around with ethanol free premium fuel? 5.00gal @ less than 10mpg! ouch! but fun as hell. Reminds me of watching offshore cigarette boats.....

Plus we're in Canada -- last tankful I bought was $1.75 per liter. In Canadian dollars. So, a little rough math ... and you come up with about $5.50 per gallon. But it's all worth it when you stick your boot in it and get thrown back in your seat as the Turbo 400 barks second gear. Oh, and don't forget ten bucks for a bottle of octane boost!

The ol poncho runs great with 103 Octane or higher. We use to have a Sinclair station here in town where you could get 103 for off road toys. $7 / gal.

Sorry, but having 10% ethanol has NOTHING to do with pinging / octane rating. I suspect you have some wickedly advanced timing or carbon build up that has effectively increased your combustion ratio. My '67 BB Corvette has the same ratio as yours and runs fine on 93, granted it will ping a bit on 91.

Did you watch the TV episode of Hot Rod Garage where Freiberger totally de-bunked the myth of higher octane producing more HP ? Older hot roders like myself have known that for years !

Not carbon build up.. Maybe the 6AL is/was f**k up.. Runs like a champ on racing fuel or avgas

Then again .. Around here who frick'n knows what was actually in the gas station tanks.

It never ran good with ethanol blend. I didn't have any issues down in Georgia with 93 .. I built the car while I was living in Florida/Georgia.

Um ... everybody but the greenest neophyte knows that. What high octane does do is allow you to run enough compression and timing to produce that horsepower without melting a piston crown.

Agreed as well but what is also known is running higher octane than what is required is a waste. Thinking it will make more HP, it won't !
