Prices.... Going Up!!!

Just heard chlorine shortage now too. Stock up if you have a pool??

I grabbed enough chlorine tabs yesterday to last me through the year. None of the local Home Depots had any and only one of the Lowe's stores did. The pool industry has suffered supply shortages and increased demand for new installations. Vinyl liner orders have been delayed along with other supplies. Local pools installers have mostly stopped taking new orders until next year. Covid had a large impact on the manufacturers. The chlorine storage is directly tied to damage at a large plant in Louisiana caused by Hurricane Laura that resulted in a fire.

True of many leisure home products and upgrades. The recent COVID restrictions have popularized the staycation. I was ahead of my time! Back when we moved to our current home I bought it and made improvements with that in mind.

I've gone back and forth on coconut oil (not sure what to make of health claims for or against), use it now only in popcorn.

We've been using avocado oil for all cooking -- smoke point is 520 F, so it "smokes" (pun not avoidable :)) everything else. Anything fried with avocado oil comes out amazing -- it seems like it absorbs almost no oil at all. I rarely eat anything fried, but when avocado oil is used I don't feel guilty at all because it seems like it was air fried.

We recently started having a tablespoon of olive oil a day -- seems to help joints and is supposed to be great for skin. The coconut oil spoonful sounds interesting as well. I have no idea how taking olive and coconut oil daiuly would compare.
I should say that I do not believe there is anything harmful in consuming coconut/palm oils in therapeutic doses. I do believe (which some here have pointed out) that better results will be had from pure MCT oil vs. Coconut/palm oil. One important thing to note regarding oils that contain omega 3, 6 & 9's. The omega 3's are the good ones that help prevent blockage by keeping the blood slick. Many vegetable oils including olive oil do not have appropriate ratios of the omega 3's to the 6's and 9's. Avocado, macadamia & walnut oil all have more appropriate ratios but they are expensive compared to other vegetable oils. The cellular receptor sights used by omega 3 , 6 & 9 are the same so if you consume to much oil that does not have appropriate ratios you will receive little to no benefit from supplementing with omega 3's found in flax oil and fish oils. Not sure if you are using oils for your salad dressings but use the avocado or one of the other healthy oils I mentioned rather than the olive oil. I am not saying you should completely eliminate olive oil but keep in mind that many foods we eat may contain high amounts of vegetable oils so limiting consumption of less healthy oils can allow the omega 3 supplements to better do their job.

How an idea-thieving little worm like him became some sort of ambassador for health is beyond me.

My father worked for Xerox during the early 70's to mid 80's, a time when they were the Apple of their day, inventing countless cool things. Dad used to tell me that Bill had stolen many of his ideas from them.

Being young and stupid (which aren't necessarily guaranteed, but in my case, yeah) I didn't believe him.

I'm believing you now, Dad. RIP.

While I've used avocado oil but am more inclined to eat the fruit than take the oil, preferring olive oil for cooking.

Re: your taking 1 tbsp daily of olive oil -- provided it's extra virgin -- is a darned good habit: extra virigin olive oil is rich in oleic acid, a bit less rich in omega-6 and omega-3 (but they're in there), vitamin E, and oleocanthal (natural anti-inflammatory). Given the sum benefits of these contents, it is little wonder that most serious olympic style and power lifters take up to 6 tablespoons daily of extra virign olive oil. Personally I take 5-6 tbsp daily, with a high-protein supplement and a high-starch thus fast-burning) carbohydrate, usually w/ ~75 grams of homemade "potato chips" (flat, not french-fries shaped) to transport the protein and olive oil chemicals into the red tissues fast. I don't recommend others consume this quantity of olive oil + a high-starch carb 5-6 times daily unless you are lifting heavy... very heavy ... @ least twice per week. My workouts, divided between upper body/push (Wednesdays) and posterior chain/pull (Sundays) consist of movements that weigh up to 280% of my bodyweight. But for "normally active" folk, @ least one tablespoon per day of extra virigin olive oil will suffice.

Agreed. Therapeutic doses of these oils is even beneficial for endurance and strength development.

Back on topic. Food prices are increasing rapidly. This correlates directly with fuel costs. Buckle you seat belts. We're in for a death ride.

Ok, back on topic. Rumoured cuts to VA benefits (Q: what else can "they" cut for **** sake?) are getting louder. Get this: as a (US) veteran, I receive, via the "NATO" thing, in France, a monthly comprehensive "veterans benefit package" that puts to shame what I had back @ The States.

PS: no belts -- or doors -- in either of my Willys G.P. things, just gonna hafta endure the rocky ride. S'ok... I'm well used to it.

PPS: still no inflationary "movement" in France or Luxembourg @ grocers, etc., despite the recent hikes in fuel prices.

And now or perhaps earlier and I didn't know: Aluminum Shortages.
NC passed a stupid law that requires you to get a new license tag plate every seven years. Supposedly the reason was that the plates can became unreadable after seven years. Of course, law enforcement nor Department of Motor Vehicles nor Transportation requested the changes. Rather some politician introduced the legislation that passed. The only known benefactor of the law is the license plate manufacturer ;)

Today the state announced the program would be suspended for a while because of aluminum shortages.

More importantly the shortage impacts manufacturers of other products, like beer cans

Aluminum shortages and scrap steel glut, thanks to the record numbers of cruise ships going to the scrappers. In my state of Alaska, they are wanting to scrap part of the ferry system including a 400 foot vessel but they can't even give it away so now are considering scuttling it and make a reef out of it.

Maybe someday if the aluminum shortages get bad enough they will start to eye the huge number of parked airliners as a source for beer cans.

......... Canola oil has been banned in Europe since 1991.........
Sorry, that is not true. I just bought a bottle last week. We usually use Sunflower oil, but I was shopping at a new store and couldn´t find it, so I bought canola (Rapsöl).

Is that why scrap is down?

When I started saving it it was $12 per 100#.

Last time it was posted outside the three scrap metal places near me it was $3.

Now they don't even want to post a price.

I've got 2 full size truck beds full :(

Saw multiple photos today of THOUSANDS of Ford pickups parked in Detroit and Kansas City waiting for computer parts. Shortage of semi-conductors is driving prices up in lots of disparate market segments.

Had a hankerin' fer a steak. Until I got to the meat market. $14.99 a pound for a sirloin. Went to the grocery store and bought a big bag of Talapia fillets for $10. I simply won't be raped for no reason at all. yes I will do without. Cannot wait 'til I buy a house. I miss my homegrown food a lot. Be doin' some fishing soon too.

My personal OPINION. There is a lot of funny money these days. Crupto currency along with the exchanges for it, block chain and now Etherium have enabled a lot of people to make a lot of money from nothing. It's all vaporware and it could just as easily vanish in an instant but it has allowed for many people to amass a small (or large) fortune doing absolutely nothing. Unlike investing in stocks and therefore companies, you're investing in a made up currency with arbitrary value assigned by the "creators."
