Prices.... Going Up!!!

Idaho here. Visited my local Denny's near the freeway, not closed but not open, now hiring signs everywhere... curious, checked for another Denny's, five miles away incorporated into a Flying J truck stop. Open, open till eight, not twenty four hours as usual. I asked about the other Denny's, waitress said all of the employees left, are making more money not working. Right... and there are help wanted/now hiring signs all over town. The close/shutting down... it is happening.

Almost everyplace up here is hiring, many places offering a sign on bonus. Something else i seen is somewhere online theres a petition demanding another $2000.00 payment.

Don't worry, there's plenty of new employees coming in right now.

true dat. I read with great interest the 1Q jobs report....1/4th of expected, unemployment notching up as more take advantage of the september expiring bonus money. AS I drive down rt30, I see help wanted in EVERY place. not some. not most. Every. a small list of the places within the irwin portion of rt30: abruzzios, bubbas, dunkin, oreilly, sunoco, 7-11, arbys, wendys, bk, mc ds, taco smell, pizza hut, mikes, vape store, dominos, sherwin williams, the rest are closed, small offices, or the new pot store that not only has a line typically into the highway, is fully staffed. (workers discount? free demos? idk)

according to the trib, the common requests on employment apps is hours from 10-4 only, m-f only, at $12-18 per hour. mcds is the first to crack, they pay $12 per plus a $100 bonus. bk is offering a $500 bonus to just show for the trial period and u-haul is giving $100 to APPLY

As long as everyone is going to pretend this is ok, normal and sustainable...well. If you have not hedged for a repeat of 79-80, its too late.

since the thread title is prices going up, locally: dimension-ed lumber: 300%, durable goods: 15%, fuels: 30%, food: 10%, meats or protein: 20%. yet the fed discount is essentially zero.

ps: 3 sheets of luan plywood in the back of the bus, will trade for a late 60's early 70's SS396. straight up, you dont have to throw in any cash

I mean, ..I hear stuff like, they can't get truck drivers 'cause no one is applying for the jobs......
my brother drives for JRE hauling oil and gas field pipe. the way the federal leases work, granted leases cannot be revoked if the well is proofed does not actually have to sell product, just has to hit. but leases not acted upon can be revoked and that is under review. so they are working 3 shifts to lay pipe so to speak. as a result his bizness is booming, he has never made so much money and all he runs is front royal to midwest. he has a new truck with comforts and computers etc (paid by them) and gets a massive bennie package as he has a proven logbook. contrast that industry using his experiences:

1) he was a furniture hauler for global when the industry collapsed in 08. not only did housing collapse, all the movers did and got consolidated into 2 owners. few drivers, no experience, they now sell 'you load and unload and we drive services'
2) he went to great wide, which pulls refers. his pen had an exclusive contract with tyson foods hauling mostly chicken products. tyson supplied their brands as well as store brands for just about everyone. then walmart started getting store brand protein from china so great wide pulled back. he still had his job as I said, he has a thick logbook, but his pen would move from hanover PA to somewhere in the carolinas TBD and his 7/3 'week' was no longer guaranteed (drive 7, home 3) so
3) he tried coke (the company, not the drug) even tho he lived in johnstown, they based him out of the dubois plant. he had to drive 12-14 hour days but claim only 10 on the logs, after a 90 minute car drive to the pen and back, a 5/1 week, $15/hr low union wages and as drivers quit the northern pa routes, they added the routes but no time allowance and the union sucked up a lot for no bennies. so that was not viable,
4) onto 'real truck' which ran flats hauling mining equipment for mclanahans (a place north of jtown pa that still builds underground coal mining stuff) but the owner was not putting money into the trucks and while pay was good and decent home time, a lot of breakdowns. you dont get paid while they repair heavy stuff
5) then he found JRE which in the interview offered him more than the ad because of his aforementioned logbook into a new truck every 2 years

the purpose of this was to show how the industry runs...previous stalwarts are no more. my whole family drove in the moving biz, my stepdad retired a back broken man in the early/mid 00's and I only used it to pay for college. it paid the most but was the hardest work. large companies (walmart/coke) outsource overseas for product and/or pay 1980s wages for one of the blue collar jobs that actually do require a license and physicals and peeing etc.

this country does have employment strengths hither and yon, but they tend to run contrary to narrative so...for how much longer?
