QUOTE
Alphabet is replacing Verizon in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on June 29 because the index provider, S&P Dow Jones Indices, determined that Verizon’s low share price had reduced its influence in the price-weighted index to an "immaterial" 0.5%.

  • Price-Weighting Mechanics: The Dow weights stocks by share price, not market capitalization. With Verizon trading near $47 and Alphabet trading near $350, Alphabet will carry roughly seven times more daily influence on the index than Verizon did.
  • Sector Representation: Alphabet is considered a stronger representative of the Communication Services sector due to its vast market capitalization (~$4.2 trillion), broader business footprint in AI, cloud computing, and digital advertising, and its scale compared to Verizon (~$195 billion).
  • Index Evolution: This swap continues the Dow's shift from legacy industrial and telecom companies toward Big Tech and AI-driven industries, joining Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia as the five most valuable U.S. tech firms in the index.

END QUOTE.
IMO, it gives the DOW an immediate lift without effort on anyone's part. I guess.

The following story just happened to me and wife. We went to DQ for some fake ice cream. I used the drive up.

Me: Hi, we want one small vanilla cone, and one small vanilla in a cup. (wife doesn't like the cones).
DQ: One cone in a cup...$3.06 at the window.
Me: No, you didn't get that right. We want one small ice cream in a cone, and one in a cup.
DQ: A what?
Me: A cup.
DQ: Cut?
Me: CUP! C-U-P, CUP!
DQ: Oh, ok.
WHen it is my turn to drive to the window, she opens the window, "That will be $3.06."
Me: That can't be right. $3.06 is the price of one cone.
DQ: Oh? I thought that's what you wanted?
Me: No. I want (speaking for emphasis now) One small vanilla cone, and one small vanilla in a CUP!
I swear to GOD almighty this is what she handed out the window: a standard paper 8 oz. paper cup with a small cone tossed "ice cream first" into the bottom of the cup!
Me: Please bring the manager to the window. Window closes for 30 seconds, and then reopens.
Me: Listen carefully! I want ONE small vanilla ice cream cone, and ONE plastic cup with a small serving of vanilla ice cream. At this time ALL 6 employees have gathered near the window. I swear the following is true -- she hands me a small vanilla cone, and a plastic dish with an empty cone in the dish.
Me: You do know, don't you, that many people want their ice cream in a plastic DISH instead of a cone. You know that right? Well, make ONE CONE with vanilla ice cream in it, then get a plastic dish and put one serving of vanilla ice cream IN THE DISH - WITHOUT ANY CONE.
And so finally, we got the ice cream.

First day on the job? Disabled, hard of hearing? Way to young to be at work (she looked about 13)?

Reminds me of the time recently when I stopped at a large home decor store to buy some coasters. After wandering around a bit I found two young ladies stocking shelves. I figured these two would know where everything is. When I asked where i could find coasters they both looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. After repeating my question it was clear that neither of them had any idea what a coaster was. "You know those little discs that you set a drink on so it doesn't leave a ring on the table?"
