Random Thoughts or Whatever

I read this article yesterday. I thought, "This never happened when I was in high school." The first student suicide I remember was in college, and it made big news. The kid was from a rich, well-known family.

Today's kids are under so much different peer pressure. And it's all online for everyone to read, see, and laugh about. It's just not a healthy thing. Wonder where this all ends, or if it just gets worse? :(

Student dies after 4th-floor fall at high school.

I remember a couple suicides when I was in high school. Graduated in 1977. LSD was involved in at least one leap from the 11th floor of apartment high rise. Police ruled it a suicide but rumors persisted he was pushed by a guy who I wouldn't be surprised were it true. I don't believe things are all that different now.

There has always been pressure, you should have been around for the draft when a war was on... maybe you were. Something is different for pressure, you know, issues of life and death, meaningless on one hand, escape on the other, has always existed. Something is different, something missing.

Class of 1966 - - - Class of 2026 As different as day is from night.

The human can't actually see the grass growing in real time - - but let a few weeks go by and presto! WOW - the grass has really grown a lot!
I watched both my kids go through high school in the late 2010s, and even then, things were different from what I remembered. And not necessarily for the better.

The difference is the cell phones and internet available today. People will end up with less social interaction. The other day grocery shopping, I saw a 3? years old in the shopping cart. The kiddie had both hands holding the phone and watching with full attention. She's on the internet land instead of the store.

I'm kinda lucky both kids were in sports in high school. That really helped their person-to-person skills.

:)

Q: Is school even necessary (useful) in 2026 first world?

I would estimate that apart from free babysitting, the utility of school is very thin.
I liked meeting girls. Grammar school was okay. High school was even better. College, Cowabunga Dude!

I had a nice experience yesterday that I wanted to share.

I needed to replace the timing belt on my Mercury outboard. I was trying to loosen the nut on the flywheel but the flywheel kept spinning. I had a pair of vise grips on it, but they were not enough to hold it because the nut was so tight.
I went google and asked what is a good way to prevent the flywheel from spinning when trying to loosen the nut? It said to pull the top spark plug and feed about 6 to 8 feet of rope into the cylinder. The piston will push up against the rope and bottom out preventing the flywheel from spinning. I tried it and was pleasantly surprised at its success.
Anyway, I learned something new and thought I would pass it along.

I've never heard of that trick. Were you able to get all the rope pieces back out of the cylinder afterward?

I cheat and use an impact gun. But you have to drain and remove the radiator. For FWD cars, sometimes removing a body access panel and the front wheel nearest the crank works.

Thanks for that tip!

Savory food for poetry (in haiku form) this.

Evolution's Endgame

Finger finds its home
An eon of refinement
Darwin looks away
Ah, the infamous "finger", esp the middle one, when raised...indicates an "insult" to the recipient!

Quite the history on this universal way to indicate dislike, coming from as far back as the ancient Greeks, carried on by the Romans, and right up to modern times. Even the background to its inherent meaning, being male based in terms of anatomy.

I do wonder what "Darwin" would have thought of our present broken, overpopulated world...even though we have thumbs. :dunno:

FWIW
