The PS1 SCPH-1001 is the only version worth using as a CD source. No mods really needed, but get a PS2 remote for it so its easier to use.

There was a website that showed what to modify. Forget the link right now. Try searching on the diy website.

+1

My 1001 sounded great right out of the box. The output is a little low but that's no big deal. The PS2 remote is a good idea and costs peanuts.

I really like my #5501 unmodded playstation 1. The only complaint I have is
that it will skip occasionally at high volumes.I am pretty sure it is a vibration
deal and not the power supply. It reads all the cdr's I have thrown at it and
I swear it sounds better than my turntable. Just for kicks I let my dad listen
to it through his Mcintosh system. He was shocked at how good it sounded
and could not tell a difference from his Mcintosh cd player but he said he
would have to stick with the Mc because it was $2,500.00
I also have the 1001 but favor the 5501 because it reads cdr's better and
sounds more dynamic and less warmed over.

Here is a link to a PDF that shows the main mods. This is a 45mb PDF, so be warned... http://www.mediafire.com/?ngdunzbyxmw I've been using a PS1 for the last few years and, IMO, if you aren't going to do the mods, don't bother, it isn't that great in stock form. If you want to try a game machine that sounds good without doing any modifications, try a Panasonic 3DO.

I use this ps1 as my main cd player.I don't know if it's as good as a high end player but it's the best i have ever heard a cd sound.
It's strength is it sounds like it's got tubes inside.
Oddly i find it sounds better with ss equipment vs tubes.
I have seen the mod pages their fairly simple. The problem is that i find it sounds so good stock.
It's the best buy in audio without a doubt.

Mine would skip from vibrations also so I suspended it from the ceiling with hooks and string. Now I can play it as loud as I want with no skip. I also own other CD players but with this setup, I can roll music song after song with no blank spots in between, using a mixer board.

I got a mint 3DO from my local thrift for $10 ages ago......never thought of using it as a CD player !!!!!!

*digs it out of the drawer*

I use a playstation in the garage. From what my boy tells me, the original playstation is the only one with the good audio reproduction. He says he can tell by the cables. After a few months of production, they changed it and it was then called the PS1.
I don't know diddley about them but I hope he can weigh in.

The original #1001 has rca jacks in the back and the later models have a
supplied cord with rca on one end only. I think the 1001 is overated and
is normally double the price of the newer version.Could be a matchup issue
also but in my cave using a 2250b Marantz and hpm 100 ewaves, the #5501
sounds great unmodded and better than a technics cd player, pioneer cd player and a panosonic dvd player. The 1001 sounds more warmed over
and will not read cdr's very well.

I have had 5 or 6 of these units (scph-1001) and all of them have read my CD-Rs fine.

I have noticed over the years that some CD burners will burn CDs that have issues being read in one machine but no in another. Just a thought.

As for the 1001 - a great sounding unit right out of the box. No need to do the mods but then again I don;t have a 2,500 CD player to compare it to, nor does anyone I know or anyone they know. :)

I've sold a few on Ebay for a small profit. These can be found for $5 easily. Broken units are typically easy to fix unless the laser is dead.

I've shared here before about my using an unmodded 1001 model. Even took one to our NW get together last year.
I've had several and only one ever had any problems with reading cd's or cd r's. I'm not using one currently because I found a pretty decent sounding Yamaha that's simply more convenient.
I do think the playstation sounded a bit better tho so maybe I'll dig it out and try it with my new tube rig.

I have modded both Playstation 1 models: Model SCPH-1001 and Model SCPH-5501. You can read more about the output stage mods here:

http://www.dogbreath.de/PS1/index.html

For both models, the modifications to the output stage and the power supply yield very good results. In my experience, Model SCPH-5501 plays Redbook CDs and CD-R discs signficantly better than Model SCPH-1001. The modifications to Model SCPH-5501include installing Vampire CM1F RCA chassis connectors along with a modified output stage and upgraded capacitors in the power supply. These mods work well together to improve the sound. Once modded, Model SCPH-5501 sounds equal or slightly better than a modded Model SCPH-1001. Compared to a stock unit, the modded unit provides:

- Deeper, extended and more detailed bass.

- Extended high frequencies. The sound is no longer rolled off at both frequency extremes as some have claimed with the stock Playstation. There is greater air in the presentation and the recording venue acoustics are better conveyed with improved detail and extension of high frequencies.

- Higher level of detail while retaining the midrange warmth of the stock unit (this is really evident once the output stage capacitors have had some time to burn-in).

- Larger, more expansive soundstage in all three dimensions.

- Improved imaging. I believe that with greater detail, the space around the performers is better defined.

The best way I can describe the result of the mods is that it addresses the weaknesses of the stock unit and retains all the sonic virtues of the stock unit.

First of all, welcome to AK! Nice contribution for your first post.

I have been thinking about selling my SCPH-1001 but maybe I'll give the mods a shot. It's not that I don't like the PS1 as a CD player, it's just that my Marantz CD-53 sounds so darn good. The Marantz sounds much, much better than the PS1. For the record, my PS1 has no trouble whatsoever reading burned CD-Rs.

Anyone figured out a good way to rig a track/time display to a PS1?

I just run a composite cable from the PS1 to my TV when I need to see what's going on. I use a PS2 remote with the PS1 and don't mind working "blind" most of the time. A small display would be nice, however.
