The best coffee?

Oooops! Did I just violate an anti-plug rule? Sorry, it was purely unintentional, I assure you.

We have a bean roaster in Whitehorse Yukon that has a house roast called Raven Roast. Very dark, like a dark French roast. Mmmmmmm.

I hate Tim Hortons, Second Cup is OK, Grande Mocha Frappachinos from Starbucks is the only thing I'll buy there.

I grind my own and have a small Cappachino machine that makes a decent cup.

Also, adulterated with some nice Irish Creme, yum.

Did 8 o'clock recently change their beans to a cheaper kind? Anyone know?

Yes they did , a few months back a friend read a few articles , it stated the company has gone for a cheaper coffee bean to save & make more $$$$ .
I just got one of the new bags last week , it's almost non-drinkable , pure cheap rotten tasting crap ........ hate it !
Gonna have to order me some from net worth coffee brokers this week , or swing by starbucks , also gonna try the Trader joe's as suggested on here :thmbsp:

I went and bought a bag of 8 o'clock beans today. It tastes lousy, compared to before. More like charbucks, bitter and beans roasted to dark, it also leaves a bad, bitter finish to each sip. These are definetly not the same beans, they had for years and years. I bought my last bag of this new bean crap. It is not the same anymore.

Ok, I've switched to 8 o'clock 100% Columbian for the past two weeks. I buy the 12oz bag of ground coffee.

My take - excellent coffee.

And it is $1 cheaper per bag than Dunkin Donut ground coffee and the Dunkin bag only has 11oz.

The 8 o'clock is not bitter at all to my taste. It's smooth and good.

My two cents.

I agree , i just bought another bag last week to give it one last chance , it's worse that ever , there is no Coffee flavor to it at all , I'm gonna order some net worth coffee brokers this week , it's big $$$$ but life's too short to drink crappy coffee .
Too bad as the 8 o'clock stuff was a good cheap coffee .

Could it be....

I had a friend, now deceased, who was in Europe just after WWII (late 1940s), and one of the things he missed most then was coffee, as it was not a popular drink there, at that time.

He eventually got someone from the States to send him a supply of the
Maxwell-House-Chock-fulla-Nuts-Folgers of the day which he was used to.

To his surprise and dismay the coffee tasted terrible!

He always maintained it was the water; so, I'm wondering about the various reactions in this thread from various regions to the same coffee(s), like the Eight O'Clock: could it be that the water in different areas of the country varies enough to make the taste different?

Now I'd guess if you got up in the morning and made a pot of coffee in NYC and then hopped into the AK Corporate Jet (there is an AK Corporate Jet, right?), then flew you, your coffee beans, and your coffee maker, to SF for a pot of evening coffee, would you notice a difference?

Hard water?

Soft water?

Heavy water?

any thoughts on what differences in the environment affects coffee taste?

Yeh i'ms ure the water makes a difference i have a filtering system , but i had been buying 8'oclock for 2 or 3 years & all of a sudden the last 3 or so bags are awfull , just no Coffee taste , but any other brands (that are good) taste fine .
Plus a friend read an article about how they were changing to cheaper beans somewhere , they'll be sorry when sales diminish , i won't buy it anymore .

Our Costco has a roasterie right inside. The coffee they roast is branded as Seattle Mountain Coffee. It comes in Sumatran (great for espresso), Columbian (medium), Breakfast (light), and Columbian decaf. 2.5 lbs. for $8. We grind the whole bag, and vacuum pack it at home, and just use a little at a time. We have a Keurig machine with the "My K-Cup" filter, so I can use my own beans. And we have a Starbucks Sirena espresso machine.

We stay awake all day.
