Thorens owners group

joined the thorens owners group right after I joined AK!

Nice setup, tube heaven =). I have standard solid state amps, what is a good tube pre-amp to start with and will it make a difference to my sound? Dont know much about tubes but very curious.

Here is mine

This is my current set up. My Mcintosh MX110 Preamp FM tuner went south so I pulled out the preamp and amplifier and replaced it with a Sansui 9090 I have as a backup. The Thorens will never be replaced. If it brakes it will be fixed as soon as possible. It is the pride and joy.

some people say the best place for tubes is close to the source. so a tube pre-amp would be the best way to venture into tube territory ;)

a tube pre-amp will make a difference to your sound, but don't expect it to be completely different. from my own experience, I use one tube pre-amp and am waiting to get another one for the other TT. in the meantime I use the built-in pre-amp of the korg mixer. if I were blindfolded I would not be able to tell the difference more than 60% of the time.

@kaplang: lovely turntable! it doesn't look as though it'll break any time soon

This is a bit premature on my part (may be coming into a Thorens table soon), and, just in case, I like the idea of having the group on AK. Should I gain possession of the table, which I believe is either a TD125 or TD126, I will be visiting this site quite often for tips, etc.

By the way...have any Thorens owners ever seen a mod using stacked platters?

Record Stacking Thorens TD224. I would love to own one if I could afford it.
Here is a you tube demo of one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_ouqCsZUx0

Unlikely Unless.. your Current setup is somehow inferior. Best of SS sounds pretty well the same as best of Tubes.
That took me almost 40 years to accept.
If you needs discover this for yourself : surf Ebay, there are myriad Wee tube preamp/boards for ~20$ max.
No... Not.. Audio Weenie certified... but far more capable than their ridiculous prices suggest.
Happy hunting.

In searching for more images of that incredible TD 224, I stumbled on this TD 221 with tangential tonearm. The designers at Thorens were pretty out there in the early '60s.

Very cool. Those arms have always puzzled me.

Action shot playing some Slowhand.

Just bought a Thorens TD-150mkII and cleaning it up. I want to run it stock for a little while but at some point I want to look for a new plinth. Does anyone know where I can find one for a 150mkII?

OK that's so far out there it makes a Zero100 appear normal. I want one of each. :)

I am happy with the sound that comes out of my solid state amps, just curious about tubes. The cheap ones are not nasty are they? May be a case of spending a mint just for a small improvement?

Count me in. My first belt drive turntable!

New wall shelf and I put a brand new EVG stylus on the M91 cartridge yesterday - sounds fantastic.
