what needle do you guys suggest?

now I just need a minty dust cover to go with it too. If guys have any leads please shoot it my way.

What cartridge do you currently have for it? That will influence the stylus recommended for it.

If you don't have a cartridge for it already, what have you budgeted for a cartridge? There are some good cartridges out there in the $50 - 80 range and some really good cartridges in the $10,000 range. Just depends on what you can spend.

I use a Shure M97xE. It's in the $50 - 80 range. My system doesn't justify a $10,000 cartridge and my budget would die laughing.

I have bought several styli from them and have always gotten a good product. They are highly thought of here at AK.

I'm also thinking of a cassette with nice meters. I don't know where to start. I probably shouldn't consider it anymore.

Yup. I understand about that stylus being a bit heavy on the wallet. When I bought the first stylus from Jico for my Shure M24h it was $55. Next one was $80. Now they are $111 and I'd have to think long and hard about buying one.

The Pickering is a fine cartridge, no need to change it.

The stylus is another story. There are numerous styli available for that unit: D400, D625,on up to D1200. The higher the number, the higher the quality. OEM pieces pop up from time to time on eBay but their scarcity is driving prices up. Unfortunately with many cartridges, replacement styli are worth more than the cartridge itself.

Jiico is well regarded for making replacements for most popular cartridges, but their pricing is beginning to rival OEM's.

Keep an eye out in BarterTown, good deals pop up there all the time. In the end replacing the cartridge may end up being more cost effective.

Given that the D625 is not a lot less than the Jico, I would be tempted to try the Jico. However, I have heard a lot of different opinions on AK about whether other manufacturers' styli play well with the xv-15. Personally, I don't know but I do have the same cartridge not in use at the moment.

For non-critical joyful musically involving listening it'd be hard to beat a Shure M91 or equiv that can take the EVG generic N91 stylis. This stylus is the present-day $13 sonic bargain steal that the entry level Grado was in the 1970s but with better tracing and sound IMO.

I have that combo on my Sansui FR 4060, sounds great. I really want to try the Jico SAS but I can't justify 10x the cost of the EVG right now.

I run the N91ed and EVG stylus on one of my Duals and am very happy with it. Just be sure that you are getting the EVG as there are other similar budget stylii on eBay. needledaddy1 is my source but there are others.

I was able to do an A/B comparison with the EVG and a genuine JICO and although there was a difference it was not great enough for me to justify the price difference.

The Pickering also is a very good match for Duals if you can find a suitable stylus within your budget.

With such a vague thread title you'd likely do better asking the question in the Turntable forum.

My Linn came to me with a bad original stylus and purchasing a new Audio-Technica Dual Magnet Phono Cartridge (AT95E) from Amazon cost about $45 and offered both a replacement stylus for the stock cartridge or a complete new replacement cartridge on a small budget.

For some reason, in my experience,the 1229 arm works well with a wide variety of cartridges. I really like the all around performance of most Pickering cartridges. Most people would agree that the Pfanstiel cartridges are generally a budget compromise, but the conicals I have used sound really good for very little on a 1229.
