I read somewhere tequila is the new (or coming) craze.

You are correct!...for the past several years or so tequila has enjoyed double digit increases and agave growers increased their plantings accordingly...it takes 7 years for the agave plant to mature and be used to make tequila...however tequila distillers are reporting inventory backing up in their warehouses and in fact there is a glut of excess tequila now...unfortunately trends can change almost overnight in the beverage industry and leave distillers in the lurch...the same thing is starting to happen in the bourbon business as well...younger drinkers are drinking ready to drink cocktails, choosing marijuana, or abstaining totally...as far as overall growth, it's a tough time to be in the beer, liquor, or wine business.

Bourbon drinkers are more likely to enjoy a nice smokey Mezcal over Tequila, not the crap with the worm in it. Fancy bottled tequilas being sold by celebrities and backed by hedge fund greed presents a great chance of getting ripped off.

If I were moving from bourbon to tequila I would be looking for a barrel-aged anejo such as Siete Leguas Anejo or one of the Corazon anejos barrel-aged in used Pappy bourbon barrels or Thomas Handy used rye barrels...stainless steel aging doesn't give near the mature taste of wood...the smokey mezcal would not appeal to me, but might to others...as far as celebrities/greedy hedge funds owning brands, my experience has been that their products are usually top-notch because they have the bucks to do it right, from production through promotion, and they don't want a lesser quality dud damaging their image...doesn't mean it hasn't happened though...the true test of a product is if the consumer buys the SECOND bottle, an indication that the product has some legs.

Last bottle for the holiday season is Jefferson's Reserve but a Single Barrel selected and bottled for Trainos in NJ. Very smooth.

There are many who opine that a bottled-in-bond, and Evan Williams in particular, are the best buys in bourbon...100 proof, 4 years old, distilled from one distillery in one distilling season, and bottled under government supervision to insure no slight of hand is used...being bottled from a single distilling season means there is much more taste consistency than if blending from multiple seasons were allowed...besides EW, Old Grandad, JW Dant, JTS Brown are available in most markets...a relatively new one, George Dickel BIB, has gotten some good reviews from whoever reviews such things.

Not NOW, but this afternoon when I watch the first Casino Royale (with David Niven), it'll be the last of my Bean Tennesse Honey. Yeah, not really bourbon I know, but my two (Christmas) bottles of Buffalo Trace are now gone and no more at the package store

Had several recently. Town Branch, Kirkland Small Batch and Old Grandad Bond 100. All inexpensive but good. Eagle Rare and Willet in the mid price. Old Grandad surprised me. It even has a cork, not a screw top. It's rye so a bit sweet but I loved it neat.

Use a 12 oz. Tumbler -- preferably crystal.
Fill the tumbler with ice cubes almost to the half-way point.
Pour in a shot your favorite not-too-cheap-but-not-too-expensive bourbon (I just happened to buy Knob Creek on this day).
Fill the rest of the tumbler with - and this is very important that you get this part right - CANADA DRY FRUIT SPLASH GINER ALE.

This is the best GD mixed drink you will ever taste.

It tastes like a lollipop and campfire smoke. Like Sweet and Sour. Or Heaven and Hell.

Coldest Spring I can remember, had to kill off this large Bottle of Knob Creek on MAY 31st! Brown liquor season ends for me 5/1. By then I am ready to move onto gin & rum tonics, etc. not this year.
