Why The Vitriol On Disco?

The reason why Disco sucked in the 1970s is mainly because it was music written to a very specific time signature and was the 1st corporate music where image & looks counted while musicianship meant nothing ,much like the rap dribble being jammed down our necks today.

Can't nobody tell me there was anything hip or cool about this disco mess .

Now as far as funk music ,the 1970s we're the bomb with highly skilled musicians like these cats pumping out solid grooves that we're anti disco formula .

This ^^.

Listen to the funk that the disco drivel came from.
Listen to the one truth.

You want a disco inferno ?

All of those records were from the era , but not every one was a disco imo. The Taste of Honey song was number 1 for 1978. ( on WABC New York ) I remember staying up late and recording it off the radio in the countdown . Not sure I’d consider that one disco ...Chic and Summer, yes.
You had ABBA, Bob Seger , Paul Simon , Billy Joel , Wings , and Jerry Rafferty that year , definitely not disco

KC and the Sunshine Band , there’s one .
Ok

But I think you will really like this interview

We Are Family by Sister Sledge has some of the coolest bass playing one will ever hear, Bernard Edwards was the king of Disco bass. Bernard, Tony Thompson, Niles Rodgers and other accomplished musicians played on that recording. Problem with most disco is it was overproduced and keyboard heavy at time when Rock and R&B was still using really good musicians on their recordings. I listen to pretty much anything that has individual musicians feeding off of each other but most disco was done with a producer and a keyboard player without much input from musicians feeding off of each other. Now a days most music being released is a guy with a bunch of samples on his PC and a singer with no musician interaction at all.

Most of the reason for the vitriol ...
Cheesy lyrics
Goofy over the top "jive"
Flashy goofy fashion associated with it
Most of it lacked the sophistication of other genres of Music with Extremely Repetitive lyrics with fewer instruments than Rock, Country, Classical and everything else.
Just lacks the sophistication of today's "Club Music" by comparison.
Or maybe because it is just Silly, Goofy.. ..

But there are a few "cool" tunes...not all was horrible....
It would be interesting to see some of today's band's rework and remake some of it with today's technology

You say it better than I do

For me Labels like Salsoul,Prelude,West End and casablanca are where the real gems can be found, especially the before mentioned Salsoul that had a roster of talent that still gets sampled and re-edited and remixed today in all forms of dance music, artist's such as Loleatta holloway,Jocelyn Brown,Inner Life,First Choice,Double Exposure,Instant Funk not to mention the Salsoul Orchestra that backed most of it.
Here's just a few of what i'm talking about.
these are like gold dust to dj's.

I remember disco as an all inclusive genre that pulled people from different walks of life. It was always those on the outside that such statement, “disco sucks” were made. What ever opinions we have on this era or genre one thing is certain it brought entertainment and joy to many. Isn’t that paramount?

Great post
It's still bringing joy to people in underground house and dance music venues and anywhere people go out and dance all night.
Dj's like Danny Krivit,François Kevorkian and Nicky Siano still touring.

My serious question for the night.

I like it, and enjoy videos of the scene(s).

So what do you have to say about it?

I think much of the "vitriol" exhibited/expressed by (especially) "The Boomers" during the Seventies has subsided, with many of us having, in the intervening year, come to embrace and even love some of The Disco Era ouvre. Speaking on my own behalf, I have come to love Barry White, certain (disco era) BeeGee numbers, Samantha Sang, Gloria Gaynor, KC & his gang, and several others of lesser fame.

Youthful ignorance? As you have stated music remained the same the mind has evolved and came to appreciation therefor the genre will endure.

Before the phrase "disco" was ever coined we called it "bump" music. Disco came later, and we considered any bar with a DJ instead of a live band a "discoteque" because they were spinning discs not the genre of music played. Hence the vitriol, it was replacing the live bands at the venues because it was cheaper for the proprietor.

Hadn't been out "clubbing" in decades, I see that live bands at many places have returned, thats a good thing. Recently had the opportunity to hear "The Fossil Rockers" in S Fl featuring the lead guitarist Wesley B Wright from the Miami Sound Machine.

My lady and I spent a number of evenings at Crawdaddy's in Jensen Beach, Wesley often joined us at our table during the breaks in the music. If you look closely at his left hand you'll notice his last two fingers are now almost useless, this almost ended his playing. Living in S Fl can be dangerous, Wes was shot in the hand attempting to stop a robbery/mugging.
