Yesterday I re-did the crossovers on a mismatched pair of AR2a's.
I was a bit puzzled to find that the older speaker (c.1961) had the normal values I've seen elsewhere for 2a's - a 6uf and a 4uf wax covered cap. However, the newer one (probably c.1966) had a capacitor that was marked as having...
I'm looking to recap my polk monitor 7c speakers. I know they are a well-regarded vintage speaker but I'm not 100% loving the sound. I tried getting the replacement tweeters (rd0194-1) but they didn't fit in the original driver opening. After some research I found that if they are all...
The reason for the question is that most parts suppliers levy substantial charges for international postage - Mouser is an exception (no intended plug for the business).
If anyone has experience with this, I would appreciate it if you could let me know if any of the caps in the Mouser product...
My almost unedited troubleshooting event of this 30 year anniversary amp that was eating final tubes for breakfast, before I get yelled at be sure to review the constraints of this project, so YES, i would have done it different, given the choice
Enjoy,
hello
I would like to replace the capacitors in my vintage sansui SP-L100 speakers, Im assuming these old capacitors can't be working to good after all this time. I have never replaced a capacitor before plus I can't seem to find a replacement kit on eBay since these speakers seem to be really...
I'm still a little fuzzy (not uncommon for me) about capacitors and replacements. I want to replace a film cap from a Sonab OA-12 and the original says "5.6/10% 100v." Would like to use a WIMA cap as I have heard great things about them, and for $4.00 I'll splurge. But the closest value I can...

Case 1:
I have a set of 2 way speakers (PSB Image 2B) that I want to upgrade capacitors in. The 3rd order XOvers have a 1.5 uF, 8.0 uF and a 12 uF cap. They are all 10% tolerance caps.
It's easy to match the 1.5 and 12 uF with identical capacitance caps within my price range for this project...
I just got a pair of KLH model thirty-one and they sound great. One of the tweeters was having some issues but it started working. I've decided to re-cap this 40+ year old set, but when I opened it up the only capacitors I could locate were the 4uf paper caps connected to the tweeters.
Does...
I picked up some caps (Sprague 716P Orange Drops, Sprague 194P Yellow Jackets, and Pyramid PGIX [Vitamin Q]) to try out in some of my equipment and began reading about outer foil orientation. None of these caps have foil end indicators. I currently don't have an oscilloscope.
While I am on the...
Hi,
I've got a few vintage Denon direct drive turntables that I'm going to sell in order to pay for a better model vintage Denon direct drive turntable that I just bought. I'd like to do whatever I can to maximize the value of the ones I'm selling and have noticed some TTs listed as "recapped...
Hello everyone !
Geoff, I'm new here, 27 y/o from Paris.
I waited a long time to get a vintage turntable, I got this Nice Jobo Acoustical, I mounted a SME 3009 on it. But that worked for ... two weeks.
I noticed that it took a little time to start before it completely stopped working.. I'm a...
Hey folks,
I started working on my CR-420 again. I actually pulled a couple capacitors in the power supply to try and test them and then realized that my meter wouldn't work on the big ones. Duh.
Anyways, I put them back in (with the correct polarity) and did some more cleaning. Powered up and...
With your help, I've rejuvenated my Hitachi receiver and my wife's Yamaha receiver and have them both working nicely. Now that they are working well, I have a Nak 480 that I bought new in the 80s that I'm hoping to bring back to life. It works, but very poorly - with sound very muffled. Not...
So, recapping. It's often advised for old gear, for obvious reasons.
I've done it before, to varying results, mostly good. I am good with the careful selection and replacement of caps, but I lack the knowledge of the principles of electrical circuitry and amplification that will ensure that I...
Hello. I am pretty new with rehabbing vintage gear but recently (and successfully) recapped a Marantz 6300 with no issue. My question is, I just got a free Nikko Alpha 220, Beta 20, and Gamma 20 set. I know they aren't amazing but free is a pretty good price. I'd like to do a recap of the preamp...
Hi,
I usually restuff my tube amp multicap cans, but I have an amp that has flimsy plastic cap housings and I just don't think it is going to work.
For the caps in the 50uF (500V) range it is no problem to find multicaps from JJ, F&T or CE, etc. However, in an amp (Luxman SQ38FD) I have there...
My 2226B is starting to have some issues and I plan on recapping it. Is there a list of the needed capacitors or will I have to go through and count how many of each is needed? Also, any advise on going about this procedure is appreciated. It will be my first overhaul.
Hi,
It's the second bose 1800 series 1 in my family. My other one I also took completely apart, added a loudspreaker protection board and replaced the 2 resistors needed to avoid the board from blowing. Did the most necessary stuff on it and plays fine (except for the silent buz it makes, but...
Hi everyone, I'm new here and new to vintage solid state. Found a McIntosh MA5100 on the street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan - that it didn't have tubes is the only reason it was still on the street, I suspect.
I hooked it up and tried it out but it sounded faint. So I started doing some...
This isn't strictly a "tube audio" issue, but it's something I have been thinking about in that context...
I'm interested in learning the correct way to calculate the appropriate value for AC line noise suppression caps, for filtering RF noise and random transients from the AC line before they...
Would appreciate some help on this one...
Just moved to my new house, setting up my stereo room, turn on my KR-9400 and BOOM! Massive pops/cracks coming only from the left channel. Took it about 15 seconds to start after I first turned the receiver on. Happens with volume all the way down...
I have embarked on a quest to get all of my old audio equipment (Heath-kit, Carver, Phase Linear, Sansui, Marantz, Luxman since name dropping seems to be popular here :) ) in working order. I will then in a big rack with a patch bay to select which device I will listen to on a given day. But I...
Apologize if this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I was unable to find this easily in a search...
How long do capacitors last on average?
I have a pair of Polk Audio RT-400 speakers that are circa 1997-98. Are they something that might be worth re-capping, or are they not old enough yet?
Hey all,
I am rebuilding a set of crossovers for some Cerwin Vega PD-9s to put into some Cerwin Vega D9s and I am having a hard time finding exact matching values . An example is the original caps were 40uf, 1.5uf, 7uf, 5uf, and 3.5uf. I can only find a 6.8uf, a 3.3uf, and a 5.1uf. In some...
