i really liked mine for the time that I had them I went in another direction with infinity's for my home theater but my intent originally was to use them for fronts in the home theater
a well balanced speaker good highs that didn't pierce the eardum and a deep low end the only real criticism I had with them is the plastic stand if you will on the bottom it raises the speaker three to four inches off the ground for a downward firing port the plastic seemed kind of cheesy to me and didn't integrate well into the really nice wood veneer

I got the 1's, and 3's, but not the 2's. They could sound decent with the right material. I basically consider them a rock speaker though. They sound very good with classic rock. In my listening room, I don't find them to be special with jazz or female vocals. For my own personnel preferences, I find them to lack a little in the high end.
I really like the looks of this line of speakers though. The wood used in these cabinets, is also very easy to refinish. Here are my 1's

I've got a pair of Model 4s (refoamed and recapped), compliments of Snade. Based on my experience with the 4s, I really think they were a step forward in the evolution of the classic EPI offerings.
Recently, I compared the 4s (accompanied by a friend with great ears) to three other speakers of some repute:
While the Indignias had the best overall tonal balance they sounded a bit small in that location. Stands would have helped.
Of the remaining three, the Epicure Model 4s were clearly the best in terms of overall tonal balance and I continue to use them there. I'm not bashing the 4xs or 10s as they each had their strengths. It's just that IMO, the Epicures were the best overall in that setting.

- DIY Karma Indignias (clearly the smallest of the bunch)
- AR4xs (redoped and recapped), and
- Genesis Model 10s

Robie, what type of music do you generally listen too with the 4's? I think allot of times, we all like the sound of different speakers, because for the most part we all listen to different music, and we also all hear things differently.
I once had a friend over, who thought the 3's were the best sounding speaker I own. This was before I had the ones. To me the 1's and 3's sound exactly alike.... (and I really mean absolutely identical), I would bet your 4's sound very similar to mine, due to the same drivers being used.
One thing that is interesting is the 1's came with a equalizer, much like a Bose 901. I do not have this equalizer, but I suspect it would modify frequencies similar, throughout the entire model lineup.

I've always liked this line of Epicure speakers. I think a nice mod would be to remove the plastic base (I agree...seems cheap compared to the rest) and put some large cones/spikes on them instead to still allow clearance for the port while maybe tightening up the base with better coupling to the floor. I really like the finish and shape of the cabinets.

Me too, I consider these one of the best looking pair of speakers I own. The plastic bases never bothered me much. (It does suck that there plastic), but I don't find them particularly ugly. The plastic basses have pre-drilled holes to add spikes if you desire.
I think the biggest problem is the tweeter, If only it went a little higher, and could be a little more forward. I believe these would then sound fantastic.
