Electro Voice Interface: A

Does anyone remember these speakers? They were sold in pairs, came with a box/equalizer, had large passive radiating woofers and secondary rear firing tweeters.

Yes, I remember them. I wanted a set then but couldn’t afford it (same ol’ story). If I come upon a pair at a reasonable price I’d jump on them. I have an old High Fidelity magazine test report on the Interface A in front of me right now. High Fidelity used to publish response curves with their tests. The Interface A has one of if not the flattest response curves the magazine ever measured at the CBS Laboratory.

I repaired a set a few yrs back. I still may have some pics buried in my HD.

The PR was very unique. I refoamed the 8 inch woofer and recapped the xo's.

I have a pair. I had to re-foam the woofer and the PR, plus replacing caps in the active EQ. They still sound pretty darn good and have respectable low bass.

I actually corresponded with Ray Newman and Don Keele, who were responsible for the design, to get a copy of their AES paper on Thiele-Small parameters for a college project. They were both very kind and helpful.

I have a pair of these. They're in pretty much constant use in my workshop system.

I have, technically, the wrong EQ (from the Interface B), but EV states that it's equivalent to the original one (same circuitry).

All I know, is that the EQ works very well with the speakers, and I've had no desire to replace them with anything else. For a speaker that will fit within the space available for them in the shop (limited), they have a very good balance of virtues... great bass, good dynamics, good balance.

The design is a sixth order Butterworth high pass filter. Four of the "orders" represent the ported box (port = passive radiator) and the other two are in the separate box. The speaker and EQ box are absolutely mean't to be used as a set. Sixth order should roll off at 36dB/octave.

I finally got around to refoaming mine yesterday. I purchased these a couple o fmonths ago. When I got to the seller, he said he forgot to mention they were completey inoperable. The speaker foams were completely gone and replaced with some loose fitting bubble wrap.

I hooked them up this morning and I can't believe the bass that comes from these little guys. if you close your eyes, you would swear you are listening to some big floor standers. I am only pushing 20 watts through them and they are filling a large room.

BTW, I was surprised by how heavy the magnet for the woofers is. For such a small speaker, it weighs a ton.

those are the first and the best of the interface series speakers. i had the B's and they had an inferior woofer and tweeter to the original A's even though they were short floorstanders. but the cabinets were built like tanks!

it is my understanding that the A and B equalizers were the same electronically as far as construction but the A used the original interface woofer and it had different specs. the B had the cheap woofer and a bigger cab and so the eq curve was not as extended and rolled off sooner. the extension on the A's went right down to 30hz flat. also the treble section of the eq box was for the new tweeter on the B.
