Favorite Bourbon

Jack Daniels ....is Bourbon. I don't care where it's made. It's damn
sure not blended whiskey. Tennessee is close enuff to Kentucky and
a long way from Canada.

No it isnt, and its not because of where its made, its HOW its made, NOT bourbon, and now that they've lowered it to 80 proof, isnt coming home with me. Please note that it nowhere on the bottle says "bourbon".....because they CANT. Sorry, wrong on that one. If you dont believe me, call them and ask. That said, taste wise, bourbon is as close to describing it's taste, well until that 80 proof bull do-do.

Great and under-appreciated bourbon, IMHO.

You sir, are a man of refined taste.

Agreed. Another great job from the folks at Buffalo Trace.:thmbsp: Their 12 year, at 20 bucks (when you can find it) is a real value, approaching Van Winkle Lot B......not quite, but same flavor profiles.

Price tag still on, 19.99, this is a steal!!!

My birthday was last week. Because my family/in-laws don't know what to buy me (hey! I'm an audio nerd, they haven't an idea!) I received a couple of checks. So I decided to treat myself to a bottle of Woodford Reserve.

I had almost forgotten how good it was.

I have no "favorite", but I have "favorites". I am currently favoring the W.L. Weller 12 Year Old. REALLY favoring.

I have Crown and Yager in the freezer. My girlfriend makes me drink it.

I know, I'm a wuss.

Jim, I don't think either of those are Bourbons. If Crown is Crown Royal it is a blended, Canadian I think. Who knows what Yagermeister is?

I have kept cheap Bourbon in the freezer but room temperature is just right for a good woody Bourbon.

PM, I may invest more birthday cash in one of those or more LPs. It is hard to decide.

Happy belated birthday Grainger! Don't drink that all in one place!

John, Thanks! And just thinking of that makes my head hurt. I live with a two drink maximum.

Now that the frost is on the pumpkin here in the northeast, my thoughts return to brown liquors of all stripes. Yesterday I was able to purchase some Van Winkle Bourbon at fair, by NYC standards, prices.

1 bottle of the 10year 107 proof Old Rip Van Winkle
2 bottles of the 12 year "Lot B" Van Winkle Special Reserve
1 bottle of the Pappy Van Winkle 20 year Family Reserve. :thmbsp:

No 15 year or Rye at the shop where I found these. I like doing my own Christmas shopping! :D

Just caught this. As far as I know, the only difference between JD and "true" bourbon is that JD is filtered relatively late in the process. There may be other small differences but it seems that JD is as close as you can get to bourbon without technically being a bourbon.

There's another start-up around here that combines some bourbon making techniques with some scotch making techniques. I don't know if they've even released their first new batch yet, though. Not sure I want to pay a premium for 2-year licker again.

I'm thirsty, can I come by?

I picked up a bottle of Corner Creek bourbon but haven't cracked it yet- I do have my hopes up! Got a 375ml split of Wild Turkey 101 at work today- it's a company tradition!
I'm with RT about the frost- brown liquor & dark beer!

I think you'll like the CC. Slight apricot back-flavor, good balance, a real bargain, IMHO.

I went out on a limb and picked up a bottle of George T. Stagg, based on some of the recommendations from this thread. Not quite sure what I am in for with this bruiser, clockin' in at 143 proof! There are a few bottles in the lineup ahead of this, plus the the fact that the wife bought it for me as a Christmas gift, along with a LARGE, as in 1.5 litre bottle of MaCallan 12 year old sherry cask single malt. So I don't see trying it in the immediate future, but down the road I will take it out for a test drive.

RTfan,
At 143 proof it will make you hop, skip and go naked. I have a hard time drinking anything over 100 proof.

I don't drink much, and never alone. I prefer regular rail bourbon, it's cheap, and I especially like Long Island Iced Tea if it's a buzz I'm after. I never drink more than 2 if they're in a tall ice tea glass. I'm getting FU if there's some KB to be consumed as well. Usually (generally speaking) I gravitate to that instead (in addition?)...

I've been enjoying a bottle of this for the last month or so.. ya gotta use it sparingly cause it ain't cheap, but boy is it oh so tasty..
