I've got a question for the bourbon experts here, I just picked up 2 bottles of Weller Antique, one with no age statement, which I realize is the new bottle design & another which says 7 years with the same 107 proof and "antique" written on the label. (Sort of Pappy lookin')
Any difference between the 2? The older bottling was $5 less, should I go back & grab the other bottles from the shelf? Or no big deal? Thanks.

I'm no expert (Expert, n.: def., A has-been drip under pressure.), but I've heard preferences for the older bottle's contents. I compared the two side by side for awhile, and my smudged palate could detect no differences (other than I like the old packaging better).

Thanks PM, I agree on the packaging, much more stylish. I was holding out the slightest hope that it may have come from the legendary Stitzler/Weller distillery. But alas, much like my dreams of winning the Powerball the other evening, they did not come to fruition.

I never could tell the any difference from one bottle to the other. But I'd go back and get the older bottles. I liked the looks of it better myself. Reminded me of the RIP bottles.

Anyone else watch FX's Justified and notice the reference to Pappy this week? Have spied a bottle or two before in episodes also. Never remember them mentioning Pappy Van Winkle by name before though.

Guess the secret is out now, will be even harder to find. Not like the old days when it was just a local bourbon.

I had 2 sources for Van Winkle products here in NYC & got shut out on the fall release. One shop said they did not get any allocation at all. Either that or they were holding some for their best customers, but I was dropping some worthwhile coin while there so I don't think they giving me the heisman.

No one else watch Justified on FX? The bad guy keeps asking for Pappy Van Winkle, like it needs anymore advertising!

Allegedly, its just the bottle. I like the "Pot bellied stove" looking bottle, but it just gets thrown out anyway!

Ezra Books in the house. Not expensive or exclusive like the more recent posts. But it is a good full bodied Bourbon that can be sipped straight without making that face.

My current rotation.

I also have a handle of Black Eagle (for mixing) and a bottle of Old Overholt rye (for Manhattans). :beerchug:

Not A Bourbon

Heaven Hill has something new, Trybox series. It isn't Bourbon because it isn't aged. What it is, is the white lightning that comes out of the still.

I don't know what to think of it. But I won't be buying it myself.

I think 'White Dog' is the correct term for that product (un-cut, un-aged distillate). Buffalo Trace sells some on occasion, too.

Makes good lighter fluid.
