Favorite Bourbon

Ok, this is 9 Year Old 120 proof. It is **** KICKER! I can't drink it straight. Water is my friend here. So about 2:1 and a cube of ice.

The flavor is good, rich, a little sweet, but strong!

Don't even think about Booker's then, lol

Picked up my first bottle of Weller 12, that is right in my wheelhouse! I am a fan of wheater bourbons, and Weller is the poor man's Van Winkle. Since folks have discovered what a great value bourbon is, certain bottlings, like the entire VW lineup have become quite scarce. So while Weller is readily available in both the Antique & 12 expressions, those will be open on my bar at all times.

Good man! WLW 12 is soooo close to RVW 12. However, the WLW 12 is getting almost impossible to find in some markets. I did luck into a 1.75 yesterday while up in Dallas. Those haven't been in the Austintatious market for a couple of years.

BTW: I'm still looking for what I mentioned to you (I hid it from myself... not good), while enjoying your kindness greatly.

It's hit or miss around these parts also. Some stores don't even put it out on the shelf. Instead keep it behind the counter, making one ask for a bottle.

Glad to hear PM, I await your reviews. I came across a stash of Weller 12, in 750ml only, but enough so that I believe I will be able to get some more without too much trouble.

Yes it is 12 year old 90* Van Winkle. Nice and smooth but getting harder and harder to find all the time.

Broke out the 10/107* last night. Got to pick up some Weller tomorrow, I'm out.

Barney

...or, you can get a bottle of Weller 12. Same "juice", but Van Winkle gets first pick of the barrels.

Barney

Thanks for the tip fellers. Just picked up a bottle of Weller 12 and sippin' a lil' bit right now.:thmbsp:

I spent 20 minutes in the bottle shop yesterday. I was looking for something unique to try. The guy there suggested a Bourbon that had its final aging in a Port cask. He let me sample it, it was a tiny bit sweet. So I bought a bottle (with flash):

I took it home and poured some into the snifter (ambient light):

Hmmm... It wasn't as sweet as the sample at the shop. This is a "special blend" supposedly. Maybe mine didn't get the same blend?

We will see...

I've heard that Bushmill's is aged in porto casks. Sounds tasty, Grainger. Love the neon, man.

My favorite so far was the first top shelf bourbon that I purchased. I am new to all this so there might be others out there but from the ones I have tried this is it.

Bowman Brothers from A. Smith Bowman here in VA

Since I have a hard time picking just one, here are my top 10 I have on hand at the moment:

1. Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year Old
2. 2010 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Weller
3. 2012 Four Roses Small Batch Ltd. Ed.
4. Jefferson's Presidential 18 Year Old
5. Wild Turkey Rare Breed
6. Rock Hill Farms
7. Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
8. Van Winkle Lot B
9. Blantons
10. Rowans Creek

Cheers,
RG

Top Ten! I can't buy that many at a time. Maybe if I bought tenths? But of course, the limited editions are never available in tenths.

Even at the "high end" bottle shops" here I don't see many of those listed.

I've been building up a nice collection of bourbons for several years now. It took a while but once you have a good selection, you just need to replace a bottle once in a while.

The Van Winkle stuff is getting next to impossible to find. I could not even get a single bottle of their 15 year old last year. Didn't get any of the Buffalo Trace Antiques either. I was lucky enough to find the Jefferson's Presidential and Four Roses locally so that kinda made up for no Pappy.

I guess I should have stuck to my absolute favorite, the Pappy 15, but I find it hard to say that it's my favorite since I like them all :D.

Cheers,
RG

1835 Texas Bourbon, especially considering the price... If price is no object, it'd be something else, but might be Redbreast. ;)

The less you know about that stuff, the better (IMHO). Far better to buy some Evan Williams.

There are a couple of really good texas-distilled bourbons... and some fantastic corn whiskies!

I keep trying to branch out, but I always come back to Woodford. There are surely some good bourbons out there, but Woodford is king. However, the Van Winkle 12 year I've had is damn good, so I'm going to seek out some Weller to see what's what.

I know of Rebecca Creek (seems like I heard it may not be made in Texas)... And there's a place in Pinehurst that makes a couple (I wasn't too impressed).

What're your Texas recommendations?
