Favorite Bourbon

According to the MI Liquor Control Commission list, this is the only version available in MI. :sigh: Time for a run to the border?

I made a Manhattan with it yesterday, and, as usual, a bit heavy on the vermouth and bitters to cover the bite of the cheap bourbon or rye I usually use. I'm going to cut back to a classic recipe this afternoon with this stuff.

Ok, I may have found an upscale liquor store. It had a wide selection, best I have seen here. I still don't see the Weller longer aged Bourbon here.

I bought Eagle Rare (single barrel, maybe it is all single barrel, I don't know!). The first sip straight made the top of my head explode!

So two cubes and a splash of water and I'm enjoying sipping it while listening to a new SACD.

It is different than Woodford Reserve. Not as smooth but still has a number of flavors that mix in there.

More later, less sooner.

My cheapo go to when i've been spending too damn much money on fancy audio gear and import CDs whiskey/rye/bourbon! :D

I would love to get my hands on EW bib, but alas, it doesn't make its way here. I must satisfy my bib taste with Old Grandad. Good stuff.

I bought a bottle of Grandad bib as my first legal liquor purchase upon turning 21. I still have it in the cupboard, unopened, awaiting a special enough occasion.

Spec's carries it. Stop by next time you're in Houston.

The big Spec's here in Sodom-On-The-Colorado only sells the EW Black Label and Single Barrel expressions.

There is no liquor store in Texas as good as the Spec's on Smith Street in H-town. I always drop by when in town, even if just for a sandwich.

Only thing that's tough to find in PDX package stores is Van Winkle. Very few bars carry it either! :tears:

But, tbh, i'm more of a Single Malt Scotch drinker. Really only branch away from that during the Summer months.

PM,

Are you sure? What is a single malt TX whiskey like, Bourbon or Scotch? I have never liked any Scotch I have had, but Bourbon is another thing.

And why would I want to chew my drink? (I am referring to the link)

If you're talking the ~$90 William Larue Weller and not the WL Weller you're unlikely to find any 2012 left and will have to wait for the 2013. Ask them to take your name and call IF they get a bottle of William Larue Weller or George T Stagg this fall (they might not). If you like rye, the Thomas H Handy is nice and also from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. I find the eagle rare 17 and sazerac 18 underwhelming. I've owned all five from multiple years and have had a bottle of Stagg each year for the last 5 years. Also, Eagle Rare SB is thought to be just an aged Buffalo Trace.

Black Maple Hill is another favorite of mine but can be hard to find.

:-)

You know, I've never discovered the caramels, apples, and floral bouquets in my Van Winkle, either. Sometime I think these guys just make stuff up. My favorite was a review of an Islay Single Malt Scotch that said something like, "Tastes of seaweed, scorched earth, diesel oil, and old rope. Rating: 9/10"

As for the Balcones Corn Whiskey: I've only had their Brimstone scrub-oak smoked whiskey, and it's an absolutely wonderful potion! 106 proof.

You sir, are a gentleman of refined palate.

:-)

The Lovely Blanche gets all the credit, she's the one who got me the bottle for my birthday! Still, hints of leather, oak, vanilla and a whiff of honey is nice, and at 107º it's far smoother than I had expected.

Bought today for a trial. Old Weller 107 Brand (didn't see the proof, if it is 107 it will take my head off).

More later, less sooner. (Good description of capacitor break in)
