Favorite Bourbon

All of you Weller fans -

Can you give your impressions of the Special Reserve and the Antique 107? FWIW, around here, the 107 is actually about $3 cheaper than the Special Reserve.

I have both here and I have to give a nod to the 107. They are both very smooth and likable. Well worth a taste, Finn.

Pat, Weller Special Reserve, Antique 107, and Weller 12 are all the same "juice" (the same stuff that Van Winkle is drawing from now for most of their expressions), just diluted differently. The 12 is the only one with an age statement. The SR and 107 dropped their "7 Year" statements a couple of years ago, but they don't seem to be suffering for it quality wise.

Here in Texas, the SR sells for about $21 for 750ml. The 12 is about $24, and the 107 around $28. I prefer the 12 (by far). I like the 107, but it is HOT (as a 107 should be), and I will sometimes add a splash, or a single ice cube. Special Reserve was my "go to" bourbon for years when I couldn't find Rebel Yell (probably at that time an 8yr version of the same juice, but today Rebel Yell is no longer distilled the same as Weller/Pappy, but is a thin bourbon with nothing to recommend it, IMHO).

All very good!

+1 on the single icecube treatment with the 107. I'm still looking for the 12 out here in Lalaland.

I'm ok with a splash of water. We have a lot of boulders in the water here so I have it filtered, de-mineralized, softened, chlorine removed and then filtered again. I have never bought a bottle of "designer" water.

I rinse my cars with the filtered de-mineralized water when washed for that "spotless" finish.

Remember when (you gotta be an old guy to remember this) Weller sold bottles of their spring water from the Stitzel-Weller distillery? Came in the same bottle as Weller/Rebel Yell/Van Winkle, fairly plain white label. As I recall, it was about a half a buck for a fifth.

I'll have to try my next glass of the Weller Antique 107 with a splash of water. For a 107, I expected a lot more burn than there was.

It's smooth for such a high proof. I'm a firm believer that the ideal proof for whiskey (with or without the e) is 100.

But make sure it's GOOD water, and not tap water.

I"ll use Poland Spring the first time, but NYC water is consistently ranked among the best in the country. It must have something to do with running down hundreds of miles of concrete pipe from the upstate reservoirs.

Good tap water is treated water: chlorinated, filtered, and probably fluoridated. A non-mineral spring water is closest to the water used to dilute the whiskey to bottling strength. Poland Spring is good stuff (even if its name always reminds me of events in 1968 in a different Eastern European country). The Nestle-water down here is called Ozarka.

Also, municipal water is rated at the distribution point, not the tap (usually). A lot goes on between the reservoir and the water glass... and not much of it is ideal. I read a report several years ago about how tap water varied from location to location in major municipal water systems (things they don't always have control over). Interesting read, to say the least.

All this talk about water, what about the ice?

I buy bag ice just for my Bourbon. Buy the water by the gal jug. Then put some in an old Grolsch pop top glass beer bottle and place in the frig.

Yep. I use filtered water to make ice (and coffee).

PM and I are contemporaries. But I don't remember Weller selling the bottles of water. Probably because I lived in Atlanta with very clean water there. I doubt any liquor store there sold it except for the really high end places. I didn't frequent those.

The other night the wife & I got caught in a bruising rainstorm with 40+ mph winds and driving rain. We're talking standing under a building awning for 1/2 an hour and only moving because debris was whipping around the building. Anyhow we finally made it to a restaurant to grab some dinner and have a drink. Which after a quick beer, as I was quite thirsty, turned into a lovely glass of Weller 12 neat. It certainly helped take the chill off my back but couldn't cure the soaking wet pants. If you like OWA like I do, pour yourself some Weller 12.

I took the bottle of Weller 107 to my brother's house this weekend. I helped him with some house wiring.

I broke it out on Saturday night, one ice cube and a splash of water. He sampled it then his wife sampled. By 10:00 it was almost sampled all up.

I think they both slept well. I had 3 short drinks.

Regular 'ol Jim Beam.

Since they're trying to make a distinction between Beam's stuff these days that would be Jim Beam Black Label :D

The Weller Antique 107 is gone after 2 drinks this afternoon.

The fancy pants liquor store, I sometimes visit has 4 shelves of Bourbon. The bottom shelf has Early Times (not really Bourbon now), Military Special Bourbon and a few others.

Weller 107 is on the third shelf but tastes like it should be on the top shelf. (Woodford etc.)

Thanks to all who post here. Without y'all I wouldn't have found this sleeper! ! ! ! !

All things considered, price, taste, proof... this one.

PM, I have some similar Mexican glasses. They have a straight side. Haven't seen those.

The regular Liquor Store was out of Weller 107. They said it would be in tomorrow if the distributor had it. I'll report back.

It is about $25 for 750ml here. I don't know how that compares with other states/cities.
