Favorite Bourbon

103 proof ass kickin chicken

College football is 35 days away with the "Battle of the Carolinas" to be played on Thursday night August 29th.

Bourbon and football in the south are inseparable and are the main ingredients that make tailgating such an event. It's common to see tailgaters with big screen satellite TVs and plenty of bourbon reveling in the parking lots with no tickets or plans to enter the stadium.

While the alums at "The Grove" at Ole Miss enjoy their Rebel Yell the other bourbon also named for an SEC mascot is...............................

USC-UNC game time forecast: "Clowney with chance of pain" :D

I know of Rebecca Creek (seems like I heard it may not be made in Texas)... And there's a place in Pinehurst that makes a couple (I wasn't too impressed).

What're your Texas recommendations?

Rebecca Creek is a bit of a mystery (they are evasive in their descriptions, but I'm pretty sure they import their juice... probably from Indiana).

Garrison Brothers in distilled, aged, and bottled in Hye, Texas. The corn and wheat come from Texas (they grow their own corn, and they use Panhandle wheat), the water is Texas rain water they capture, and the taste is hot and complex. Highly recommended (and priced accordingly high).

Not bourbon, but getting close, Balcones corn whiskey out of Waco (!!!) is excellent stuff. Their single malt is making some Scotch folks nervous, and their oak-smoked corn whiskey is a thing of joy. Premium price, but not as much as Garrison Brothers Bourbon.

Garrison Brothers is $80 for a 750ml here, and $155 for a 375ml bottle of their Cowboy Bourbon... Ouch.
Balcones is $45 to $65; $60 for the single malt.

The GB Cowboy Bourbon was "priced" by the distributors, and GB ain't happy about it. It was supposed to be $150 for the 750ml (still high, but it's something like 145 proof!). I've tasted it, and it is KICK ASS Bourbon (but way too pricey for my dusty pockets).

But I'll say it again to all who will listen: if your store has any Weller's 12, grab all you can. It's an honorary Texas Bourbon in my book, because Weller still favors the Texas market (Weller sells very strongly here with hardly any advertising support).

I can't say I'm too impressed; not bad, but maybe too wheatey for me.

I'll swap ya' something. ;-)

That's the exact same juice as Pappy Van Winkle Lot "B"... and soon the older vintages (except there aren't any Weller's 10/15/20/23).

Rumors have it, WLW gonna have some sooner then later. Just takes time to age the stuff!

Big fan of the Wheaties myself.....

Sazerac can't seem to make up its mind about what to do with Weller. They sneak out the ultra-premium William Larue Weller every so often... but then they remove the age statement on Special Reserve and Antique 107. I imagine that's a pretty complicated agreement they have with Van Winkle.

What the @#$%^&! happened to my favorite Knob Creek?!?! It's all sweet like Maker's now and there's no trace of that excellent oak wood finish! Oh well, Woodford's is good as is Eagle Rare.

Picked up a bottle of Very Old Barton the other day. The bottle shape and the color caught my eye, the 6 years old neck label and the $12.99 price sold me on it.

Very tasty stuff, lots of different flavors in it. IMO it's better than bourbons I've had at twice the price. This could become my goto whiskey.

Gets good reviews on the Bourbon boards too.

VERY good stuff. Hit's way above its price bracket.

If you can find their "Bottled in Bond" release, GRAB IT!
