Is humanity doomed?

Despite the Chicken Little's of this world, the fact is the virus has killed only 1M so far. Since the human population adds about 80M a year, I would say we are doing just fine.
Well yes but I think he was referring to the reaction, the operant conditioning being affected by the virus, not the virus itself.

Lock it down.

Yes, we are doomed!
In about 4.5 billion years, our galaxy will collide with Andromeda. They say our sun will make it, but until then it will have grown to a giant that will have roasted us. So, there's no question, we are doomed.

The problem is, how to survive until then.
Well... if one wants to talk about such things you do realize how short our life span is don't you. I mean, this thing of survival is much more immediate than any of that... either there is more to life than what we see... transcendental, something individual that goes on from here... or none of that makes any real difference to anyone except as a humbling realization that we might look a bit deeper at our own existence and the marvel of it for what we might find. Either there is meaning, purpose to life or there isn't... nothing in between. The big bang thing... theory... either there is escape velocity and everything that is continues to drift from everything else that is forever or it all collapses back into itself and starts the whole process over... either way there is nothing for us here now... and besides, as far as the what and why that theory doesn't even touch the question, at best it provides a distant notion to capture reason to figure but doesn't provide any answers.

With the ability to find almost anything on the internet, I would say that within 100 years or so, people will have ability to actually find anything online. When that day arrives, we are all doomed. Some nutcase will figure out how to build a nuke in his mothers basement or create some genetic mutation of some virus/germ/whatever that will kill us all.
That's already happened... where do you think all this technology came from... so far some nutcases have figured out ,or pay those who figure out how to build things like you describe and they run things... not in their basements... they fund universities and provide grants just for those purposes, the trickle down gives entertainment and keeps everyone on the job. I mean really... that's what it is.

On so many levels we (Humankind as a species) are the goldfish in the bowl that is slowly being brought to a boil. By the time we realize that it will be too late. The only question that remains is how long it will take.

On the other hand a slower demise is not a certainty. There can always be a cataclysmic event such as a asteroid hit or nuclear war on a widespread scale that could speed up the process.

On the bright side side Life has shown itself to be very adaptive so in all likelihood some type of multi cellular life will exist on this planet until the Sun completes its lifecycle several billion years from now.

Or, perhaps the approaching apocalypse?

That last word has a specific meaning to many people which will by the rules of this site not be discussed here in detail. I will only say that History is replete with examples of the prediction of "end times" that have come and gone. Eventually I guess someone will be right.

In the meantime we can all bide are time here on AK arguing about the effectiveness of high end cables and the proper way to clean vinyl. :D

In the words of Dr. Smith... "doomed, we're all doomed". I don't think humanity disappears overnight. Did you ever watch the movie Soylent Green? We have ever increasing population with a lot of our pollinator species dying off or threatened by invading species. The world's oceans are becoming so acidic with dissolved carbon dioxide that most mollusks and coral will be extinct in 50 years and cause the extinction of countless other sea life. Food, in general, will be in short supply and there will likely be large scale famine. This is our future if we don't radically change the way we farm and create energy. The sea has been absorbing carbon for 20 years and will take another 20 years or more to correct it IFF we change to a completely carbon neutral economy RIGHT NOW. Not bloody likely, so I think we can safely say we're f*cked.

More like a spreading rash, humanity is the scourge of all other life on earth, life on the planet will be much better off once we're gone.

I don't know about that, without us eating them and such I think they could breed and eat the planet out of their own food supply.

Has not happened yet or there would be isolated/random nuke explosions/strange new outbreaks, (not the hoax covid) 'round the world, indicating the beginning of the end.
