Official AK fishing thread

What's the possession limit on the island?
Usually four trout per day but best to check the local regs with DFO as not all lakes/streams are the same. Same with salt water which gets even more complicated with minimum/maximum sizes and retention numbers depending on species and location. Separate licenses and tags are also needed for salt or fresh water. Ching Ching Ching. A lawyer buddie would be good to bring along to help interpret the regs. Good luck!

Yeah, different regs for different lakes and streams is pretty parr for the course. ;) The Ontario fishing regulations can be pretty complex, too. Not so much with slot limits - although, there are slot limits for some species on some waters - but more with open and closed seasons; possession limits that vary depending on if you have a "Sport" or "Conservation" license, and even by body of water on some lakes and rivers; no fishing in year-round fish sanctuaries and seasonal sanctuaries; bait restrictions regarding what you can use, what you can catch for bait, and have in your possession; also, the number of rods you're actively able to use on some bodies of water whether you're in a boat or on shore, etc. It goes on and on.

It all depends on each species of fish you're fishing for, and the borders between fishing districts can be tricky to decipher sometimes, and sometimes the open and closed seasons can change depending on which side of the border you're on. There are also TONS of exceptions to the general guidelines in the "exceptions summary" for each district that can have different open and closed seasons for different species, and different possession limits for different bodies of water within any given district. So it's extremely important to see if the the body of water you're fishing is listed in the exceptions section for the district you're fishing before fishing it. It's all "normal" to me, but I can only imagine how confusing it is for out of province anglers.

One day I'll have a boat again, but I still can hit the big lakes around the edges in my little Kayak. We have some great fishing here, one of the best Smallmouth lakes,(St.Clair), in the nation plus all the other species.

I'm assuming that was the trophy/prize winner?
Yup, a 28.7 lb. chinook salmon. Cash on the table is my half of the side bets which was over five grand. First prize was a cheque for 15K, which I also split 50/50 with my fishing partner.

The old JDF Derby used to give out boat packages for first/second place but since it was a lot of work, they switched to cash prizes instead. $25,000 for first plus the side bets, $15,000 for second. I never won that derby but did place in the top ten twice. Side bets are usually $100 a boat.

Congrats!

Rigging this native falcon 11. It’s my last ditch attempt to get healthy.. and fish on the water. Long story I guess. Previous Yak was WS Tarpon 120View attachment 3385828 You just have to get out and get it done! I've been doing it for 30 or more years...Fishing from a kayak, and I love it! I just use a small sit in, I had a 12'Shadow Caster sit on top, but it wasn't for me. Just getting out in nature and on the water is always nice.

My daughter, with her first fish, caught on a homemade rod grandad gave her and using my 35 years old first reel. This meant so much to grandad. The fish is nowhere to be seen as it jumped straight into the water after being dehooked, before I could snap a picture of it. It was a good day.

Today we said our goodbyes to grandad and will be scattering his ashes in his beloved Gaula in Norway soon.
