Same here. I grew up in Akron, Ohio. For decades it was the "Rubber Capital of the World." Every tire in the US was made there, until the rubber workers priced themselves out of the market. Companies started "outsourcing" tire production to other countries.
Today there are no car tires made in Akron. Some specialty tires (racing, farm equipment, etc.), but that's it. Company headquarters are still there, but production is gone.
I will say one thing though, the city smells better.

Capital can turn on a dime. One minute a factory with 5000 jobs is in Akron, then they just move 8,000 miles away in a heartbeat. But 5,000 people will need years to rebuild their lives. Around here, it was furniture and textiles. Some of the old mills have been converted into apartments, shopping, restaurants and other housing. Most have been torn down or are falling apart. 2 of Cone Mills sites in Greensboro, Proximity and Revolution are nice and on the upscale side I understand. In the southern part of Alamance County is the old Saxapahaw mill site that is now apartments and condos i think. The mills dam created a 10 or so acre area of the river used for fishing, canoeing and other recreation.

HQ's is in Akron, but the Goodyear plant is here in SW OK..

The Republic paperboard company just east of it is the smelly one..
Not to be too picky, but that's only one of many plants around the world. I did a quick lookup and there are 57 plants in 23 countries. But Akron no longer makes passenger car tires, the labor market priced themselves out of business.

A city needs to last a lot more than 50 years of life to make the investment worth while. Building a city consumes lots of capital. Just when you get it humming, the supporting industry decides to pull out and move on. The city will crumble, the capital is lost, it all dies as a waste pile. No society can afford to keep doing this. Once the capital is exhausted, we're left with bone yards.
I noticed that whenever anyone says, "Wierder things have happened before," actually, wierder things sometimes haven't happened.
The last time a supervisor kept saying this, was when the sewer line backed up and popped a cover. All the stuff came pouring into our work area.

I didn't mean to imply it was the only plant.. sorry if it came across that way..
It's a big one though, and brings alot of money to our part of the world..
I have a sudden urge to ask: can fish fart, even if they contain no air or other airborne gases? I have observed our fish tank for intense hours and saw no bubbles coming out of their poop chute. I was at it this morning when the wife lost patience and suggested I ask any AI bot about it. One told me they fart out of their mouth, but when I replied that belching doesn't count, my laptop froze solid. The next AI said fish are apt at projectile-flatulence. Wow, a programmed epiphany.
I don't care if fish can fart or not. If such stupid questions can still cause AI to draw and use power to "think" about it while keeping hundreds of data center tokens busy fishing for answers (pun intended), where in the world will AI find the time to develop "self-awareness" and eradicate humanity? Armageddon-mongers always forget that AI has no emotions and is not particularly good at handling situational contexts that mathematical models can't solve, and (even quantum) equations sometimes face situations where a problem has a number of vastly different but still adequate solutions, but it can only choose one. Dilemma and AI don't match. Reality is not binary; we just try to make it so.

I just watched it last Thursday - maybe my 3rd viewing since it came out.
It is stunningly great in every respect. I did not know previously that the DI was not an actor, but a real DI, who Kubrick hired to teach the actor how to be a DI. But during the teaching, the real DI was so damn good that Kubrick hired him for the actual role. He is f*cking amazing.
Secondly, in the interim since I saw FMJ years ago, I had become a fan of Vincent D'onofiro from his role on Criminal Intent. He is spectacular in FMJ. He blew out his ACL climbing the barriers in boot camp. Finished the movie with a leg brace and still climbed the obstacles. He gained 80 pounds to do the role. Kubrick gets the best out of actors.
You think you have trained a bunch of killers---then they go to someone else's homeland and get bested by a 15 year old girl with a sniper rifle and an attitude. WOW!
That movie showed all the cohesion of the Corps' grunts and the craziness of the Vietnam War. Some of the most memorable lines ever.

NO expert here.
However, I have to wonder why they call these LLMs, "AI". It's a neat trick, mathematically and statistically predicting "which word should come next.." But the training is on the Western Civ canon of literature and available texts. I can't see how that can ever lead to "consciousness" no matter how many NVIDEA chips are used.
I've had many long interactions regarding what I think are good topics to measure "thinking" and the AIs have done remarkably poorly at thinking, but remarkably good at regurgitating history. In all the cases I pursued, the main response has been justifying canned history. After long convos, I would then suggest a different analysis of the history they were spouting, and suddenly, they would agree with me - completely contradicting their previous half hour position. My conclusion was these things are GREAT at accessing historical content very thoroughly, and they can offer "standard analysis" that has been suggested by others, But in no case do I ever find them offering "NOVEL thinking."
