The Pioneer "Series 20" Gear Thread!

My first turntable out of high school was a Series 20 with an sme3009 and stanton mc. I remember trying to decide between it at American Audiophile in Lynbrook NY and a Rega setup from Sound by Singer in NYC. I went with the Series 20 and traded it in on a Goldmund ST4 in 1986. Anyone looking for a Series 20 PLC 590 turntable might check with Audio Perfection in Richfield MN as that is where it resided in 1986. I remember the rest of the system was DCM Time Window speakers(still in my dad's basement in Minnesota), a Precision Fidelity C70 preamp and an Amber Series 70 amp(the amp and preamp also were traded in at Audio Perfection in Richfield MN). Wow that was a long time ago in late 70's like 1978.

Well I have a SERIES20 C-21 preamp I use it pretty much as a Phono pre and to add a few inputs to my SA-9100. I hope one day to build a dedicated Vinyl only system around it for now I just enjoy it's perfectly clear gain boosting my HOMC cart to line level.

Literally I stumbled into purchasing a U-24 and then realized I needed the C-21 and found one that is arriving tomorrow. So you use to add inputs as I plan with a A-80 amp that has been restored.

It's been a while since this thread has been active, but I have recently aquired an M22 power amp that I think has to be one of the finest sounding amps I have ever heard from pioneer. It is just simply amazing! I would love to hear some more from other series 20 owners as these pieces seem to be a rarity these days.

I recently acquired an M-25 which had been sitting in a garage/shop for years. It cleans up pretty nicely but the right channel blows its 500 mA fuse at power up.

Any recommendations for someone to take it to in the Raleigh/Durham area? Or elsewhere, for that matter. I'd really like to get it running. The left channel sounded great for the few moments I tested it.

Woah, that Equalizer isn't Series 20, is it? My dad has one! He had everything in the Series 20 line minus the PLC-590, but sold it all off. This fathers day, he got back up to an M-25... he said he missed the very distinct sound.

Hope someday to have it completely rebuilt. I really like the 20 series and wish I could find and afford the D23 for use on my Valencias.

All of you guys just suck....

When I get rich and famous, I'm gonna be poor again due to bad spending habits caused by this forum.

Pioneer Series 20 A27 integrated amp

Picked up an A27 at an estate sale a week ago for $40, works great. Missing one knob, I used one that is a similar style but not an exact match so I put it on the power switch.

Thanks Retro!

All of my Pioneer stuff has been in the SA/TX integrateds and SX receivers. No SPECs. But I did get lucky and found this Pioneers Series 20, PLC-590 turntable. It was the only Pioneer TT from that era that was sold without a tonearm. The matching Pioneer tonearm was the PA-5000. Currently my PLC-590 has a Infinity low mass carbon fiber arm.

It's interesting to note the Pioneer PL-570 was nearly identical in shape and size, but the similarities ended there. I love this thing! :D

That's a great looking combination.:thmbsp:

Well I picked up an M-22 yesterday off of craigslist. Unfortunately I am working in Alaska so I haven't seen it yet !!! My son picked it up for me and he sent me some pics along with a message:

"Picked up your Pioneer, It is heavy and WHAT IS IT ??"

He is used to seeing my regular old receivers. haha

Can't wait to get home and hook it up. Dan :music:

I picked up an A-27 last year and was immediately concerned about the amount of heat it was producing. My thermometer indicated it was 128 degrees on the warmest part of the top case.

I dug up some pics that the guy sent me.... so here is the M-22 that I now own and haven't seen in person .....haha

It looks like the paint may not be perfect, but I got it at a reasonable price (I think) haha

Dan that looks like some serious stuff.A step up from the spec series I presume. So what pre amp are you going to use? This may be your doorway away from receivers.

Hi Ron, I bid on a PIONEER C-21 preamp on ebay, but I lost the auction.. So right now I'm gonna use My PIONEER SA-9100 as a pre amp.... Dan :music:
