The Spendor Thread..

Anybody here have a chance to compare the Spendor D9 vs D7? I was in NYC a couple months back and demoed the D7s. The imaging and midrange was fantastic. Bested my older Monitor Audio speakers for sure, but one som tracks I did notice more brightness than I'm used to with my MA Silver S10. IT could have been the room, or maybe they needed more break in.

Just going to park these here. Grilles are reupholstered and front baffles are repainted. The original black paint on the front baffles needed some help. I opted for an olive green to pay homage to the Spendor Germany BC1 Aktiv that came with green baffles. I always thought it looks real nice with the dark wood veneer.

The stands are DIY. The open top design works very well with the Spendors.

Haven't heard the D9s but my D7s are going on 300 hrs and sound completely smooth. Compared to how they sounded out of the box the difference is extreme. Smooth with just enough upper midrange / lower treble energy to make them sound startlingly present and transparent with no glare at all. I compare the transparency to the more expensive B & W 804 D3 diamond towers which sound amazing with the right amplification yet the Spendors are more natural sounding all around. But it took lots of hours and patience to get here!

We'll I have decided to restore these old girls (BC1's). They have been fully recapped and sound magnificent. I just can't part ways with them

Very nice! I just got a set of 2/3s, I have to say the finish on these is absolutely beautiful, furniture like.
They are not as loud as the JBLs L-100 but they are clearer and more precise with a very clean voice reproduction.
I’m still A/Bing them, so far so good...
I would maybe consider looking at recapping them too in the future

The 2/3S are really beautiful but I’m not sure they stand up to the JBLs L100 with upgraded xover....
The JBLs are way more opened, the base is there and the mids are just more reveling

Ok not sure anymore I’m listening to George Harrison “All Things Must Pass” and I have to say the spendors sound amazing , go know?

I imagine the JBLs are more dynamic (well, no doubt there) and detailed, while the 2/3s have a sweeter/smoother midrange and possibly, a less obvious cabinet presence. Your 2/3s have one of the best soft-dome tweeters ever produced IMO.

You probably know this, but to really judge them properly, the 2/3s should have no other speakers or furniture flanking them. Also, they're capable of incredible imaging if given plenty of space from the walls, but it appears you're good there.

I moved them on the other side of the speakers last night they sounded more present maybe even a bit louder??? but i did not sit alisten that much, i will over the weekend. I really love they way they look and they way are finished, i don't want to get rid of them really.

You think i should have them standing there alone without the JBLs beside them?

The JBLs beside them are likely impeding the imaging due to diffraction off the JBL baffles.

I recently picked up a pair of Spendor S3/5's to get a feel for British mini monitors. Wow! I am VERY impressed. I think I'm hooked. So far I've driven them with a pair of Monarchy Audio sm70mkII's, a First Watt F5, and a little Denon home theater receiver. It works well with all of them. Also, very surprised with the quality of bass from these little guys.

Congrats. I've read of more than one enthusiast hoarding multiple pairs of this model because it's so good.

So I'm sorry to say but the SP2/3 are not doing it for me :(
Yesterday i was listening to them back and forth against my JBL l100 that are much more efficient, the bass is heavier and the mids are very well represented.

So I moved the Spendor closer to me ( about 5-6' away and toed in) they sounded better for sure! The sound stage was very nice but I felt that they were not as clear almost out of focus if i pushed them a bit harder to get the bass up...I really love them they are beautiful and a real piece of art.

Any suggestions before they go on sale ?? I am using tem with my MA7000, maybe i should hook them up to the MC2105??

The 2/3s will never output as much bass as your L100s, nor will they be as dynamic or play as loud, however, they're much smaller speakers so that's sort of a given.

Please send me a PM if you decide to sell them, I might be interested.
