The web of japanese contractors

In a Keiretsu, a bank does not serve the same role as they do here in the US. Like German banks, their boards are composed of people from the members of the "group" and they use the bank to coordinate and enforce the decisions of the group (by granting or withdrawing access to credit). In the past, MITI used to do this by controlling access to foreign reserves. They lost that power in the 80's.

Funny thing is, the wheel keeps getting reinvented. Just look at the way the Chinese government-owned/controlled firms are run. Same mechanism. Use access to credit and foreign reserves to make people toe the line. Such a foreign concept to Americans!

This is one of the most interesting threads ever!

I have seen the T symbol on a lot of various equipment... Who knew that it went that deep....

It is a shame that so much info was junked... I bet there would have been a lot of interesting stories untold

I'd say a few of our companies learned some lessons from them. I don't think to many car companies make all their own equipment anymore do they?

It is a fascinating read though how intertwined it was and yet here in the US I had no clue until recently this had been going on for so long. Just took it for granted if it said "Marantz" that's what it was. How naive it seems now.

Brand loyalists should thank Dr. Deming. Modern statistical QC is what makes all this possible across companies and borders, and has pushed us forward. The Japanese just got there first because they listened better ;)

"Built by Japanese subcontractors...who also happen to be recently acquired, wholly owned subsidiaries of Hadden Industries."

If you've seen the movie Contact you will get the reference. :D

That's an absolutely insane amount of research.
I had no idea what a T tag was until today but I did wonder many times why 'name brand' also had 'other company' printed on the back. Makes sense to spread design and production work around though on reading it seems like it went far deeper than just subcontracting.
Very interesting read.

Very interesting article. I have always wondered how much of the design and manufacturing was done by a single entity such as Pioneer. This is a fascinating peak behind the scenes. Now I wonder if there are Japanesse audiophiles who have also done simular research who might add to the story. Thanks for all your work!

That Axel dude is badass. I have that kind of nose for research but usually it's for alcohol, nicotine, gambling and a few other things. Hat's off Axel, great work.
