It's what hipsters all tend to say and is the subject of many a whiny thread here. I imagine the old fogies hated it when we started calling records "vinyl" instead of "wax" or "sides" or "platters" but they didn't have the internet to complain on.
The only constant is change. This is especially true of slang or vernacular.

While true that vinyl is a noncount noun, it is also true, as boreas said, that this has been trod to death. Please let it end here!

I'm an old fogie and I could care less what anyone else calls them. I'm too busy listening to my rekkids to care.
I got the feeling sprags was referring to the way it was said not the word itself. I was thinking the word vinyl, more than just the material, came into use to distinguish it from shellac which it replaced. They are both records. Didn't non-breakable come into use with vinyl..... I know those shellac discs were easy to break.
Right. How about phonograph record.

"hi ladies, would you like some water to drink?" (mass noun)
or- "Can I get you ladies something to drink?" "two waters, please"
"can you bring some beer to the party?" "can you pass me a couple of beers"?

Every example you give is wrong. Every one. I don't know where to begin.
But, in your first incorrect example, using glass and vinyl is wrong. I cannot say how wrong it is without sounding impolite. Sorry, but you posted this for the world to see. But, to try, I know what a glass is, but what is a vinyl?

I did start at the beginning. What's a vinyl? (Asked in the same sense as what's a glass, but we all know what a glass is)
