What is your favorite guitar solo and why?

I think another good (and underrated) guitar solo is the one from Changes by Yes. It's short, but it fits in really well with the song and makes for a good transition.

Indeed Peter. Thanks for posting the link. His guitar is fronting the band, the rest is backup. The spirit in his voice is animating the guitar and putting it out front. He's quite the performer.

One of the most underrated/overlooked song is rock is Bob Seger's Katmandu off of "Live Bullet" -- easily near the tippy top of my favorite rock songs and guitar solos of all time:

For studio recordings, I think "Free Bird"'s guitar solo is one that sticks in the mind most.

Also, Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" -- and let's not overlook that Chuck Berry started it all in terms of rock guitar sound (as differentiated from the blues).

Honorable mentions go to: Outlaws "Green Grass and High Tides" and Eagles "Hotel California"

Absolutely -- I wore that album and the cassette album out in my youth.

Now my son is doing the same -- only digitally (a bit harder to wear out ).

All the songs are great, and Knoxville Girl is a particular favorite. I don't really remember, but I think only "There goes another love song" and "Green grass" were hits -- I suspect the rest are somewhat obscure to most, which is a shame. I was able to take my son to see them live probably 5 or 6 years ago at BB King's Club in NYC and they sounded great. Sadly, BB King's club is now closed down -- was a very cool venue.

Great music, great lyrics, seamless. I still have my original record, always played on a table but played enough to hear the wear. I need a new one. I remember hearing Green Grass and Another love Song at discos... funny thing, those songs would get more on the floor than most of the disco songs and yet it seemed the DJs didn't like to play them, too country, or something. The patrons loved them.

How do you select from the multitude of music favs that tend to stir the soul? There's just so many that do it in the many ways, as we has fo our different moods!

There's one that stands out from the many, iffin' I'm feelin' down; "Feelin' Bad Blues"-Ry Cooder '65 from the "Crossroads" album.

Somethin' in that there tune, that cries out to the listener of a lost love, or something tragic that has happened in life. Best to not watch anybody playing this solo, instead, just close the eyes and let the lament of the guitar get to your inner self. And if you ain't feelin' "bad" after listening to this sad tune, then y'all
ain't been down there to relate!

Wishin' I could bring this guitar solo about, but my PC skill-set isn't in place...yet. Maybe someone will surface this song, or search it out on YouTube.
