Worst guitar solo ever?

Love the Carpenters God bless 'em but cringe when I hear this one:

That's funny, usually people go out of their way to praise that solo (two solos, really, with the outro), not despise it.

The music in your link sounds weird-- like two versions layered on top of each other? The studio version is just one guitar, through a Big Muff or some other sort of 70s fuzz pedal.

I always kind of liked that solo. Tuneful and musical, and I smile at the way the Carpenters thought they were being "out there" by putting a fuzzy guitar on one of their ballads.

I would have to say that rock anthem from Twisted Sister. "We're Not Gonna Take It". Sad excuse for guitar work, sad excuse for drumming.....just a sad pathetic rock song. do like Snyder's radio show though....he is good at that.

I'm not a guitarist or even particularly musical, and I only got 6 seconds into this.

Truly can be held up as a great Bad Example.

If that isn't the worst ever I have no desire to hear the other possible contenders. Ironically my friend John Hoier built the recording studio Guns N' Roses recorded the original version in. When he told me the story of their first arrival at his studio I got the impression he thought they sounded a bit like that horrible cover.

You're right, taken in isolation the solo is good, far better than anything I could do. In the dorm I jammed with a novice bass player and could actually get a random Koukenen groove going. But the only drummer in the dorm refused to play with us because he didn't do "freeform jazz". I didn't get the insult until I watched Spinal Tap.

I love the Carpenters and just thought the solo was out of place I guess. OTOH the guitar work on the old Cheesy Rider Cheetos commercial was perfect. That's when Cheetos had a mouse and not a leopard as spokesman. I didn't actually sit through the youtube video to verify it because I have dialup, so it might not be right.

Exactly-maybe Andy's solo was short, but it says more than many guitarists whole bag of tricks. In addition it actually has relevance to what is happening thematically in the song. I sense the ramblings of someone very musically unedumacated or vastly over to the point of being a critic, yet not a player. Most importantly, it's art-subject to personal opinion. Now if you analyze these pieces of music based on phrasing, note choice, harmonic content, time feel, tone, etc and tell us why they make you so uncomfortable......
Didn't think stating my opinion would make me a target. BTW I've been playing since 1972 and can busk it with the best of them.
