Where To Sell Car?

I haven't sold a car in ages so looking for advice. A neighbor suggested Facebook but not sure about that. Thoughts?

Carmax is an option to get a good idea of your current vehicle’s value. You don’t have to take their offer but it’s a good starting point for negotiation. I had them evaluate 3 vehicles and took their offer once. Their offer is good for a stated period of time, therefore no pressure to choose.

Of course they aren’t available in all locations or countries.

We sold out '16 Cadillac to Carmax. Dealer offered 17K, Carmax paid 21.5K. No hassles.

Only hiccup - you get a bank draft, not a check. There may be a hold on the funds for a day or two. Didn't matter to us.

Are you needing the proceeds from the sale or just looking to off-load it?

I donated a vehicle to a non-profit and got a tax write-off. Much less hassle as it needed work to get into condition for a private used sale and I just wanted it gone. Easy peasy.

In my experience if you are selling something that is basic transportation and not too costly then Craigslist or FB Marketplace are fine because all cash deals at that level are common. Once you get above $10K cash deals are less common and I don’t want to deal with checks or money orders from individuals. If you do your research and willing to negotiate to get it you can get a fair price from a dealer or retailer.

I guess depending where you live makes a big difference. I am in the burbs of Philly and 2 blocks from me is a spot before the road goes from 2 lanes to 1 where I have sold 4 vehicles due to all the traffic going buy and seeing them. The last one I sold to a woman who lived a few houses down from where the car was who kept looking at it and decided to buy.

Good Luck. You will always get more in a private sale than a trade in.

Isn’t Carmax basically an online dealer or network of dealers? Meaning they need to make money on each vehicle purchased. If that’s so, you won’t be getting full retail value from them. It may be the easiest path though, if you just want to move on.

I think CarMax also leaves the title in your name until they sell it to someone else. It's legal process that allows them to avoid transfer fees. That could vary from state to state but wasn't a problem for me.

I would use FB if you have an account. At least buyer and seller can get some idea of who they're dealing with. CL has really gone down hill within the last 5 years or so. I don't use it at all.

Appreciate the suggestions! One thing I am looking at if it's a private sale is using Key Savvy to handle the payment part of the transaction. Have to look into it a bit more but seems legit and a good way to get paid w/o someone handing over a bundle of cash.

That's a good plan, I don't know about Ket Savvy specifically, but I just bought a used Highlander for my daughters a few weeks ago. It was a Craigslist transaction, I used Zelle through Bank of America (who I bank with), for part of it (there was a $4K limit) then Venmo for the rest. The seller and I used nothing but our phones for payment and confirmation of funds received.

I've hired kids who like to be paid with Venmo, never a transaction of this size between 60 + year olds.

I think Craigslist is quite viable as long as the parties involved meet at a public place. Preferably a nice, well-groomed part of town, with plenty of folks around. If that's agreed upon, your chances of an honest transaction are high imo.

I wouldn't meet anyone at my home, nor would I want to meet at their home.

Remember the days of Auto Trader?

I've sold a couple of cars on Nextdoor and it was pretty much hassle free. Met at their bank to receive cashiers check and sign over title.
Taking good pictures helps a lot. Wide open space, very little background, overcast day.

Used this same location to photograph 3 cars I sold. All sold at near maximum $$$ of KBB private party sales.
