Hi everyone, I recently picked up a pair of Maggie 1.6QRs that were in dire need of some TLC. I'm currently in the process of regluing the wire loop ends back to the mylar but had a question for anyone that has had experience with Magnepans/their repair in the past.
I found after opening up the...
Hey folks, I was browsing Craigslist last night and I happened upon a pair of 1.7's for 800 dollars. I'm not too familiar with Magnepan, although the descriptions online seem appealing. Well, I did some research, and read that 1.7's seem not to be particularly great. I thought for 800 dollars...
I've just been reading about the problem with placing bookshelf speakers intended for vertical use on their sides. The "lobing effect" caused when the listener moves off-axis and the sound doesn't arrive at the same time from the two (or three) now out-of-alignment drivers.
But this makes me...
In my local craigslist I've found a man selling Magnepan MG-1's that he bought originally in 1979. He's kept them in great shape and they sound great (according to him). I'm wondering, exactly how much power is needed to make these panel speakers sound as great as they should? I have a Pioneer...
I'll soon be the proud new owner my first pair of Maggies, thanks to @hjames, and I'd like to understand two things as I await their arrival:
1. What are the best options for a subwoofer to handle the low end for these particular Magnepans? I've found some chat about Velodyne ULD and DD and...
I've put together what I think is a decent system for the money and space.
Bluesound Node 2
Parasound Halo 2 Pre-Amp
Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 3
Magnepan MMC2's with a DWM on each
REL Strata 3 Sub
Signal Cable Silver reference speaker cable
On the right tracks, it's magic. Live stuff is wonderful...
FYI ... no affil. I'm scared of them because they likely need work but maybe someone here knows how to wrench on these?
Vintage Magnepan Typani IV speakers - $75
Vintage Magnepan MG-IC Magneplanar speakers *pair* - $75
Vintage Magnepan SMG speakers. Pair - $50
There is a pair of these available locally for $360. They appear to be in excellent shape. I have no idea if this is a good buy as I have no experience with ribbon type speakers. I have heard they are power hungry which is not a problem for me. Opinions appreciated.
Cheers,
David
Hi. I own and really enjoy a set of baby Maggies - MMGs. I'm driving them with a McIntosh MC2105. As others have pointed out, they are really nice and quick for acoustic music in the highs and mids and tight in the bass although they do not often venture too much below 60Hz. In a small room at...
I like my Hafler a lot, but my Maggies (MMG) could use a tad more juice. How do the professional amps like the Crown XLS series, Yamaha P series, and QSC pro amps work with a 2 channel music only system? (open to other as well, those just seem to be popular) Are they going to ravage my Halfer in...
I've wanted a pair of maggies for some time now. Thing is I'm cheap. I'm sure you understand. Most of my speakers came home from the thrift store - starting with the ADS L810's I picked up for $24 in 1995.
Never seen a pair in a thrift store or pawn shop. I don't really spend much time in pawn...
I have a pair of Magneplanar 2.7's that I bought new in 1996, but have been in their box since 2001. I paid $2,000 for them new, and don't have any idea if Maggies keep their value. Anyone have an idea what they'd be worth today?

When I started my broadcasting career at age 19 (1981), one of the first things I did was apply for a JCP credit card so I could buy my first component system. JCP was the only ones that would...
Hello all, I have been a lurker for a while, but today's find has me scratching my head and prompted me to join. I found this set of Magnepan Tympani 1D magneplanar speakers on CraigsList today and picked them up, for a screaming $100! The PO "didn't know much about them", though he acquired...
Looking to power a set of 4ohm Magnepan MMG's. My current amp isn't quite have the lungs to maker these sing. Looking for advice or opinions on these two amps. They are similar in price (800 ish$) except that the Aragon would be used and the Emotiva new. I know the Aragon is a dual mono and...
My first true audiophile grade loudspeakers were a pair of Magnepan MGLR1 2-way planar loudspeakers, using Kimber Kable 8TC 9 AWG 10' speaker cables. Behind the right Maggie is my DIY subwoofer, consisting of two 8" Rockford Fosgate subwoofer drivers (each powered by the two Carver M-400t...
Before my recent McIntosh/Klipsch system, my first real audio components comprised mainly of Carver gear from the early '80s on through the '90s. They consisted of:
*Carver M-400t Magnetic Field power amps (two, driving DIY subwoofer)
*Carver TFM-35x power amp (driving pair of Magnepan MGLR1s)...
