Dumbest thing you ever did?

the old slicing the fingers off trick, a gooder

I've got one,

Remember as a youngin' you could sneak up on a fly, cup your hand behind that fly and with a really fast motion, capture that fly... Well one day I'm lookin' at these flys flyin' around a 4' fluorescent light fixture, them ones usually painted white and made of thin sheet metal or tin. So I sneak up on that fly, cup my hand and swoooosh... I've always had cat-like lightning-quick reflexes :D Next thing you know I've cut 1/4" off each(middlefinger and index finger) They healed and somewhat grew back, but I still have 2 nubs... one at the end of each finger. :sigh:

Married my first wife !

Yeah, me too ... at least I got it right the second time (going on 19 years now).

Second dumbest - working at the top of a ladder leaning against the edge of a damaged roof 20 feet up - edge gives way, down I go, now I have a bionic shoulder that almost works after months and months of physical therapy :sigh:

1) Thawed the frozen gas line of an '83 Mazda GLC with a propane torch. If it hadn't been 10 degrees below zero I wouldn't be writing this.

2) Never mind what number 2 is, but I will never again speak the words 'Watch this!' while operating a motorcycle. If I show up in that particular emergency room again my a** is as good as kicked.

3) Young blondes. 'nuff said.

4) Decided I could repair an 1899 quarter-repeating mechanical pocket watch (push a button and it strikes the time like a mantel clock). I couldn't, and the guy who reversed my repairs got paid more than my landlord that month.

5) Decided that PCs would never replace mainframes as business computers. I now sell shoes for a living instead of being a Systems Analyst.

6) Decided that a hit of microdot was for pansies and two hits was about right for me.

Glad you appear to be doing OK.

Not sure I am, laughed so hard my family had to come see what was so funny! :lmao: :lmao:
"Watch this" are always dangerous words.

Your #2 must be a real story!

I once was handed a speedeing ticket for doing 122MPH in a 40MPH speed zone!

Got it knocked down from wreckless driving, engaging in a speed contest (no, really?),
& excessive noise...

I did "win" though... :D

I also managed to get the car to go faster as well...

thx for sharing the table saw story cause the last project I did I bent the kick back thing so now I know I gotta fix that!

heh i was a "dummy" in one of these lockdown drills at school and i guess even though its a drill when you run from the cops, they shoot with rubber bullets, and they ****ING HURT!

You boys are posers. I had the worst POS of all time- a '79 Olds Cutlass 4.3 liter diesel. They were so bad, they only made 'em the one year.Typical late 70s quality control, tiny GM 200 transmission, & that awful bastardised gas/diesel hermaphrodite motor- Ugggh! The fact they got decent mileage- about 35 MPG hiway- was overshadowed by the fact you really couldn't keep the damn thing runnin' long enuff to find out. Yeah, JD, I know that road- Kingsport to JC- all too well.-Sandy G.

My dad worked for GM and he was upset, he told me about those diesel engines, he said that GM knew, they knew they had problems with them but they still put them in production!! GM was total **** in the late 70s/early 80s. Remember the J-body cars, if I have that right, total POS!! :thumbsdn:

Automobile wise: selling my 1977 Monte Carlo and buying a POS 1981 Ford Mustang. The Monte was a very dependable car with decent mileage, a 305.
The Mustang was the worst car I ever owned, period!! :thumbsdn:

Cheated on my girlfriend back home in Tennessee, with a co-ed nursing student from Indiana State (at the time, I was was a student at Rose-Hulman, an all male engineering college also in Terre Haute). One month later the nursing co-ed diagnosed the case of mononeucleosis she gave me. Ended up losing my scholarship at Rose-Hulman and the girlfriend, and was metally and physically ill for about three/four years before I got my life back on track -- Foe

Hm, let's see... How about the time I dove out a window on the first floor of a girl's dorm (I wasn't supposed to be there at that hour of night, and the hall manager was knocking on the door), only to find that, due to a hill, the first floor window was about 15 feet off the ground on that side of the building. And there were holly bushes right beneath it. Ouch.

I think this one deserves mention, I didn't do it, but convinced one of my friends to... Drunk and bored one night, we were wandering around campus and snuck into a building under construction (bad idea #1) and ended up running from a night guard but not before my friend (in bad idea #2) grabbed a large fire extinguisher. Made it back to the dorm and looked at the acquisition, seeing something about "dry chemical" but not paying attention to it. Says I, "Heheheh, you should go spray your dumbass roommate with that." And he did (bad idea #3). But see, dry chemical isn't the one that makes the cold fog like we expected. It's the one that coats everything in yellow dust. And the dude emptied the thing in a roughly 12' square room. Two months and multiple cleanings later all his stuff is still covered in that dust.

The dumbest thing? Well, I guess getting my 15 yr. old girlfriend pregnant when I
was 17 then paying child support for the next 21 years rates right up there.

Well if I must, when the start switch on the gas grill didn't work I figured OK
where's the matches. Of course when you light a gas grill with a match you
have to make sure that the gas is on long enough right? Whoomp!!! I had the funniest looking eye brows and bangs for a week. I remember going into the house after
this brilliant idea and my wife took one look at me and laughed so hard that tears
rolled down her cheeks. But, I redeemed myself by making some great steaks!

hmmm...

Tough one! How about drinking jungle juice till I'm acting like a gorilla, going to the condemned house next door to rip off a porch for firewood, and kicking out the roof supports while standing under it?

I realised what I was doing when my foot was about 6 inches from the second post.

And to boot my friends thought it was hilarious!

Pete

Hey Pete, what's in jungle juice? Seems like you need to find some new friends... :scratch2: Luckily, AKers aren't a judgemental lot.... :)

Gib,

Stories of a miss-spent youth.

I can't remember the receipe, too bad really, but it was various fifths (many) poured into a cooler with various fruit and a bit of juice, and set aside for a day. VERY easy to drink, VERY powerful, of course we were serious drinkers (among with anything else we could get our hands on  ).

Anyway, that was from what I remember the dumbest thing I have ever done. Oh wait, there was that time I (accidently) peed on a cops leg ....

Of the many 1000s over the years -

The first time I can remember feeling like a true shithead was when I threw a rock at a girl I liked in high school, hitting her solidly in the back of the head, in front of most of the student body. She fell down shrieking. She was OK, it just cut the skin, and she forgave me right away. Her friends did not and I was persona non grata with them for quite awhile.

Another, racing on a summer Sunday afternoon in my '85 5.0 Mustang on Rt. 93 and getting hit by the other car causing me to spin out and end up in the fast lane, backwards at well over 100MPH. I can clearly remember facing the traffic that had come to a complete stop across all 4 lanes and white tire smoke going past both my windows. I turned the wheel and spun around in a 360 and ended up backwards again. I did it again but this time remembered to go opposite lock and dump the clutch when I was pointing the right way. After I got the car under control my indicated speed was over 70MPH and I got off the highway ASAP. The last I saw of the Camaro he was fistailing past the Medford exits. I believe 2 things saved me. Speed in that the tires smeared rather than grabbed. I had to replace the rears afterwards. The second was I had my seatbelt on and was able to keep hold of the steering wheel. I thank God I didn't kill anyone and have never raced on a highway since. That was 1986.

One more, while repairing a Heathkit W5-M, I broke the rule of sitting on one hand when the power is on. Somehow I managed to touch the HV secondaries, one with each hand. The shock made me kick my legs out and I fell over backwards in chair. I was also by myself at the time.

When I was about 10, my parents left me home alone for a couple hours. We had a big space heater in the basement that ran on natural gas. I decided to try to make a candle by melting crayons in a tin can with a string for a wick. I put the candles in the can and set them on top of the space heater. It worked great, the wax melted and I was all ready to take the can off the heater. So without thinking (of course) I grabbed the can with my bare hand. Yow, that's hot! I dropped the can, the wax poured into the space heater and flames shot up out of the top, scorching the wood shelf 2 feet above the heater! Just then my parents came home. "Mom, Dad, I think I set the house on fire!" The flames in the heater subsided immediately, but it was a while before they left me at home alone again! And the heater smelled like wax for months...
