Not my "Favorite Bourbon"
But, in my glass currently: Buffalo Trace's McAfee's Benchmark that's been run through a Brita water filter thrice. Cheap/easy/interesting, if not worth doing again, experiment.
A friend of mine had heard of this practice and sent me an email with links to such. I decided I'd have a go just to see what the change(s) would be, exactly. Since I'm not completely mad, I did a search for 'best bottom-shelf bourbon' and got a few articles that agreed on a number of examples. When I got to the store, I picked the Benchmardk for two reasons. One, it was the first one I came upon that was on my list. Two, it was $9.98 for a fifth. I also got a a bottle of Heaven Hill's Old Style Bourbon. Had I not picked up the wrong bottle (liter instead of a fifth), I could have been out of the store for like $22 instead of the wallet-shredding $24 and change.
Got home and measured off half the bottle to filter and left the other half in the bottle. Ran it through three times and decanted it into another bottle I had cleaned for purpose. The filtered liquid is noticebly darker than original. It also lost a noticeable amount of the initial bite as well as flavor at all points. Much more 'mellow'.
The virgin Benchmark is actually drinkable, against all normal thinking. It's better than some $20 bourbons I've had. Come on! $10?!!? I have to wonder, now, what pre-filtered Jack Daniels looks like. This experiment makes me think that it must be lighter pre-filtering just like what I see.
Would I do it again? No. Not worth the effort (not that it's physically taxing or time consuming). I like my dark liquors just like my beers, with flavor. I won't call the filtered liquid bland but, it definitely loses alot of everything. Nose, alcohol hit, flavors start to finish. I will only filter a few glasses worth of the HH rather than half the bottle. Still want to see the differences for the fun of it. But, .... Definitely would not try this with anything I would normally buy (Makers, Basil, Four Roses).
