Favorite Bourbon

I got a nasty little surprise from SS when I decided to take it a bit earlier than planned (family history dictates against waiting too long). Even though I had 20 years in the SS system, I only get half of what I should (based on my years of contributions and dollars paid in) because I also get a pension from my 20 years of working for local gubmint.

Ezra makes good juice. I've been alternating between Very Old Barton and Evan Williams as my daily-drinkers. Leaning more towards the VOB, though (but a bit harder to find, and it hurts my back crawling down on the floor peering into those bottom shelves).

You know how I feel about Weller's, especially the 12.

I'm bourbon hunting now. My once big stash of Pappy van winkle 20 yr Family Reserve, and all the bottles of Van Winkle Lot B are, sadly history:sigh:. I have finished them off.

Unless you want to pony up large bucks for the 23 yr Family Reserve, or more exotic and Van Winkle rare offerings, the pure Stitzle Weller stuff is gone...even the 20 year FR is watered down with (albeit some of their best) Buffalo Trace squeezins. Having raved about SW whiskey for decades, back when Rebel Yell ( now cheap Heaven Hill 80 proof, yuck)and Old Fitzgerald were 100% SW, it is coming to an end. Sad days.

That's a REAL sad story. Heaven Hill knows how to make good Bourbon (as Evan Williams and Elijah Craig and Old Fitzgerald attest), but their Rebel Yell is just pitiful, both the godawful 80 proof, and the upmarket 'reserve' 90, both supposedly made using the SW recipe. Maybe it's the water they cut it with.

I'm trying to build a stock of Weller 12, as that's the truest juice I've found to the old SW taste, at a more than reasonable price point. I can't quite figure out what BT is doing with it. They've dropped the age statements of the other Weller products, and the 12 has been spottily available. I thought they were going to take if off market for a while, and then bring it back at twice the price (riding Pappy's coat-tails, now that's it's no secret where VW is sourcing much of their stuff). But no. Hell, the last time I was up in Dallas (a BIG Weller's market), the 12 was priced well under the 107, and just a touch above the much less distinguished Special Reserve.

As you said, sir, sad days.

Always a pleasure to hear from you. You, sir, are indeed a scholar and a gentleman (as any aficionado of quality bourbon whiskey should be), you too Grainger.

Searching for the Weller 12...so far in vain. Yes PVW no longer distills, but gets the pick of the BT litter. I fear worse than riding the coattails, they are probably getting the geriatric BT squeezins... Wish I did!
Must be the Kentuckian in me, I've found a couple of other "Hobby sites" lately: www.homedistiller.org and www.artisandistiller.net. "Hundred pounds of yeast and copper line, everybody knew he was makin'...ahhh something or the other"...

Hmmm... Julian's 'supply control' at work?

;-)

Not saying it, but the French are notorious for having huge fires in Cognac warehouses at the same time there has been a glut in stocks. Helps keep the supply properly adjusted to demand/price.

I'm happy with Evan Williams for the value.
Woodford Reserve is quite good.

Being from ky, I typically go with the corn squeezin's, made in my friend's back yard.

And speaking of scholars and gentlemen... Barney's another fine example!

Ahhh shucks! You went and made me blush.

I been off he juice due to some medications so my stash of Rip is aging in the bottle. But after hearing this story on the news I want a sip right now. Hope they catch them quick. Been seeing ads on local CL for bottles that are gone now.

I like both Jack Daniel's and Makers Mark. My son brought home a bottle of JD Single Barrel Select... Not sure I can go back now.

You have similar tastes to me. I like a sweet Bourbon but they tend to be expensive.

A quick calculation on the Pappy Van heist, assuming the three bottle case Pappy, a bottle costs $130 a bottle. That is the $25350 divided by 65 cases, divided by 3. It is expensive but not unobtainable. But I bet I got the numbers wrong.

Just finished a bottle of woodford, as a distiller told me you could "Taste the tails in it" its Ok, just not worth the money IMHO, everyone's mileage may vary.

Just opened the regular Weller 90 proof....17 bucks.

I've never paid over 70 bucks for the 20 year Family reserve, even the last 23 year I turned down was 250...those must be insurance man prices!

Hello gents, I recently had my first taste of Angel's Envy & was really impressed with it. It rose to the top of the class during a tasting and is on my radar for the next time I stop into a good liquor store.
I agree with the general sentiment regarding the Weller lineup, excellent bang for the buck & the "Poor Man's Van Winkle." A bottle or 2 of Weller is in my standard rotation of bourbon in my liquor cabinet. Since VW has become virtually unobtainable, It will be Weller Antique & 12 for me!

Grab the 12 while you can. I have a bad feeling about its continued existence.
At least in a Weller bottle and at Weller prices...

Thanks Russell, after Weller removed the age statement off of the "Antique" I could see the "12" changing as well. Between you and Mr. Summer, I think I will start procuring some more Weller 12. I did a back to back with the Antique on Saturday night & I preferred the 12, just a tad smoother.

Grainger, I have found the best quality in a lower priced bourbon to be the "Yellow Label" Four Roses offering. Can be had for under $20 here in NYC, perhaps lower where you are. It is certainly worth taking out for a test drive.
